Friedrich Kuehn The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Germany, in cooperation with scientists from universities, research institutes, and industry, has characterized waste disposal sites in Germany. The work was commissioned by the Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt) and funded by the Ger man Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF) as a joint research study called "Methods for the Investigation and Characteriza of the Ground below Waste Disposal Sites". tion The primary objective of the study was to increase the understanding of the subsurface characteristics of waste disposal sites using geologic and geophysical methods. The work focused on determination of the thickness and physical/chemi cal properties of the lining and underlying rocks, and identification of potential migration paths for fluids in the vicinity of disposal sites. This handbook, "Remote Sensing for Site Characterization", is the first in a se ries of planned publications under the general title "Methods in Environmental Geology". It is based on the German edition (Kuehn and Hoerig 1995), which has been considerably expanded by the addition of sections by u.S. and Canadian sci entists. This volume illustrates the use of theoretical and technical aspects of air borne and satellite-based methods in the study of waste sites and gives examples of their applications.

Environmental Monitoring and Characterization is an integrated, hands-on resource for monitoring all aspects of the environment. Sample collection methods and relevant physical, chemical and biological processes necessary to characterize the environment are brought together in twenty chapters which cover: sample collection methods, monitoring terrestrial, aquatic and air environments, and relevant chemical, physical and biological processes and contaminants. This book will serve as an authoritative reference for advanced students and environmental professionals. - Examines the integration of physical, chemical, and biological processes - Emphasizes field methods and real-time data acquisition, made more accessible with case studies, problems, calculations, and questions - Includes four color illustrations throughout the text - Brings together the concepts of environmental monitoring and site characterization

Published in 1991, the first edition of The Practical Handbook of Ground-Water Monitoring quickly became the gold standard reference on the topic of ground-water monitoring. But, as in all rapidly evolving fields, regulations change, technology advances, methods improve, and research reveals flaws in prior thinking. As a consequence, books t

Site Characterization Sampling and Analysis HMTRI Site Characterization: Sampling and Analysis is an introductory environmental sampling textbook intended for use in community/technical college environmental technology curricula or in industrial training programs. Comprehension of the subject matter is enhanced by associated coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental regulations, and college-level mathematics. The goal of the present textbook is to provide the environmental technician with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist a site characterization project planner in the sampling and monitoring process. Among the tasks the students will learn how to perform are: * assisting the research of a site's background for data that a project manager will use in the development of a site sampling plan * meeting representative sampling objectives and quality control/quality assurance objectives * preparing to go onsite for a sampling event * monitoring a site for potentially hazardous atmospheres * following the sampling plan in collecting samples from various media (e.g., soil, surface water, ground water, and containers) * troubleshooting under unforeseen circumstances * preparing samples for transport to the laboratory * documenting field activities * communicating with laboratory personnel * interpreting lab reports, including the validation of quality control data The text contains photographs and line drawings to help students visualize equipment and processes. Included are instructional aids such as chapter objectives, concept statements before major sections, review questions (as well as application and critical thinking activities) after each section, and a glossary of the terminology.
