"Remote usability testing is a key tool for usability professionals. Several remote methods exist and it is often difficult to choose the appropriate method. Testing lower-fidelity prototypes often present unique problems because they provide minimally aesthetic and minimally interactive partial representations of a final product. This qualitative and experiential pilot study is an attempt to compare a remote asynchronous (RS) usability testing method where the moderator and participant are displaced by space, and a remote asynchronous (RA) usability testing method where the moderator and participant are displaced by both time and space. An important byproduct of the comparison is the creation of a low-cost, online asynchronous testing mechanism. The results show that the usability issues and participant experience vary between remote synchronous and asynchronous usability testing. While the remote asynchronous method does not require a test moderator and participants find it more convenient to complete the test whenever [they choose], participants may require clarification on tasks and usability issues discovered during the test. Participants are also critical of the remote asynchronous method and sometimes find it difficult to compete an entire session on [their] own time without anyone to guide them. Further research is needed to validate the results using a more controlled methodology."--Abstract.

Usability testing is typically done in person with a test administrator and a participant. Due to social distancing restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote usability testing was implemented at the US Census Bureau. One major challenge we faced when moving from in-person to remote sessions was how to get connected with users so that we could talk to them while observing their computer screens, keyboard, and mouse movements. It included learning how best to communicate with participants prior to the session so that they would become interested and engaged in the study and be available online at the right time, ready to work with us. It included working with other team members and stakeholders who wanted to observe the sessions in order to develop actionable outcomes on redesigns of the product based on testing results. This case study addresses the issues we encountered along with tips and techniques on how to successfully transform traditional in-person user testing to remote testing. This includes strategies for getting participants familiar with new software, on building connection and rapport with participants in different locations, and working with observers.
