A search was undertaken in two databases, Web of Science and Google Scholar. In this review a total of 365 papers were identified and 18 quantitative, seven qualitative and one mixed method studies were included. Workplaces have a major influence on employees’ quality of life and the ability to impact their well-being. The altered working conditions resulted from the digitalization are affecting employees’ well-being. Additionally, COVID-19 has transformed the approach to the concept of work, and an important aspect that disruptively emerged during the pandemic is remote working. Decisions on how to promote employees’ well-being whilst the new work arrangements need to be based on available evidence to optimise employees’ outcomes.

This research examined productivity, employee well-being, and remote work from a post-pandemic perspective. Earlier research used a theoretical and practical approach to this problem. By using the Social Exchange Theory (SET), as introduced by Homans in 1958 as the foundation for this study, and by adding both the ego-depletion approach and the positive organizational behavior (POB) theory, the author was able to provide perception into how software engineers view productivity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This quantitative correlational approach permitted a more in-depth exploration of computer engineers' attitudes and views locally and globally. The emerging themes of this research include perception, understanding, and the lack of communication, which can cause the overall goal to be unclear. While not all research hypotheses were proven within the study, the research does bring to light the measures needed to clarify and define productivity. The analysis showed both connections and contrasts in how software engineers think. Although some may perceive that geography determines perception, the study provides similarities to common beliefs centering around the topic. While there is a relationship between productivity, employee well-being, and remote work among software engineers, the small relationship is only relevant when comparing productivity to remote work. There is no association between productivity and employee well-being among software engineers and signals no significance as evaluated by productivity.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments, organizations, and employees to quickly pivot, begin socially distancing in sweeping waves, and remote work when feasible. This fast transition created a unique context in which remote work was historically occurring. Although remote work has traditionally been promoted as an effective method of employee retention, well-being, and flexibility efforts by organizations, pandemic-induced remote work appeared to negatively impact employee well-being. With many children required to isolate and attend school from an at-home setting, pandemic-induced remote work created additional strains on select populations who needed to balance at-home demands with work. One of these populations is women, traditionally primary caregivers who take on additional unpaid domestic labor. One in three women contemplated leaving or downshifting their careers during the pandemic. This study aims to understand (a) what impact(s) remote working during the pandemic had on women in the workplace and (b) the policy implications of this post-pandemic. A systematic review of relevant peer-reviewed literature found on ProQuest was conducted. Applying the Job Demands-Resource model (JDR) to the qualitative review determined there was no conclusive impact of remote working during the pandemic based on gender, and further research is needed to understand the potential gender differences experienced. While no definitive impacts based on gender were identified, applying the JDR model to the systematic review of literature found a key policy implication: the public sector must create and provide job resources (i.e., flexible policy, training on technology, social-emotional connections) to employees to increase their resiliency and capacity to effectively meet new job demands in a remote work setting.
