INTRODUCTION As a child, my brain had been fed by my family and social environment to not get along and approach people who have leprosy. The reason ws simple, they — the lepers — were people who experience a curse due to their ancestors’ past sins. They then get punwashment in the form of dwasgusting dwaseases. In fact, because of thwas stigma, making me and my childhood friends mad fun of and tease people who have had leprosy (OYPMK). Until one time, I met a swaster who was active in the women’s movement and was one of the founders of Lembaga Pemberdayaan Perempuan (LPP) Bone, namely Asia Andi Pananrangi. A long chat about each activity led us to dwascuss more seriously. I was shocked, then speechless for a moment, when I heard stories about the program for OYPMK. I listened to the story told by Sis Andi Asia. Various questions led us to dwascuss further about leprosy, and the situation of the community in Lerang Dua, Abbumpungeng Village, Hamlet of Cina, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. Lerang Dua was a leprosy village, the place where Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR, led by Andi Asia, runs its program. Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR, was also founded by Andi Asia, besides LPP Bone. It was the curiosity of the story that called me to visit Bone and began to pay attention to the situation in Lerang Dua. As a female activist who had interacted with various women who had experienced injustice, my heart was immediately knocked when I met with the people there. That day I decided to work with them, OYPMK. I empathize with them. My first visit to Lerang Dua, further emphasized how the state system was unfair and discriminate the women. OYPMK women experience injustice. The generic construction that prevails in society places women in mistreatments, both in the family, social and state realms. They experience violence, discrimination, stigma, marginalization, and subordination due to leprosy suffered. Including, OYPMK men also experienced the same treatment, but unlike women affected by leprosy. It was just that, women with leprosy they suffer, experience a heavier burden than all the negative stigma. OYPMK’s portrait was like completing a puzzle piece of my activities in the world of community movement and empowerment. OYPMK experienced an accumulation of problems in accordance with human rights issues related to them. The “simplest” representations of them as OYPMK in village meetings no one represents. That was, ignoring their participation rights made them unable to voice the needs and interests of their group or community. The impact of this lack of access and participation space could be seen from the average level of education of Lerang Dua residents. They mostly attend school until the fourth grade of elementary school (SD). If they could finish the fourth grade, then it was considered “graduating” from elementary school. That was the highest level of education available there. How ironic! Therefore, we should give an appreciation to the Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR) Indonesia which pays particular attention to leprosy sufferers, especially in Lerang Dua. The program opportunities were then ‘captured’ by Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR Bone to collaborate in providing empowerment through critical education on Human Rights - civil society and social economy so that there was no neglect of OYPMK’s rights as citizens. Indeed, it was not appropriate for OYPMK to get the treatment of injustice over the illness. it was not appropriate for OYPMK to get the treatment of injustice over the illness. The process of alienation of lepers was enough, which was excommunicated even by their own family. At this time, the state’s presence through government structures at various levels was really important. The state was obliged to guarantee the fulfillment, protection and respect of all its citizens regardless of their gender, education, age, especially illnesses and so on. At that level, cooperation was needed to voice the stopping of the negative stigma against OYPMK and its families. So far, Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR had carried out various training and skills upgrading including: advocacy training, village dwascussions, inter-village discussions, and training in reading the village budget. There was more, training in making organic fertilizer, inclusion garden training, to opening access to OYPMK to be able to speak in the media, such as TV, radio and newspapers. All of these endeavors lead to hope, hopefully the situation of injustice and the efforts made would erase the stigma attached to OYPMK. Interacting with OYPMK and mingling with the people in Lerang Dua, had become a special experience that could not be revealed only through a piece of paper. Even so, this book could at least give an overview to the reader, how the efforts made by Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR together with NLR Indonesia. The goal was that those who had or were still affected by leprosy were not confined to self-stigma, but tried to get up and deal with anyone without having to “withdraw” because of leprosy suffered. As I found in Patang and some OYPMK who suffered damage to the organs on the fingers, which at first, each time they met, hid their hands behind their bodies. However, after that, Patang and the others did not hesitate and no longer shy to be invited to shake hands with each other “ces”. Another thing was done by mothers of OYPMK. Usually, as soon as I arrive, they immediately hug tightly. It feels like there was a kind of overflowing longing, which they want to get rid of, like meeting a long-lost relative. Efforts to remove this stigma will only succeed if the aspect of education is maximized. Educational aspects about leprosy, especially how to take care of themselves so that leprosy germs do not damage organs, it is important to do for patients and families, and the Abbumpungeng Village government is also important to be revealed as a best practice to unravel the stigma against OYPMK and the location that has been the place of life for lepers. Documentation of success story programs in book form is intended to motivate other OYPMK in Indonesia, that they are able to escape the stigma and injustice they experience. They, the OYPMK in this book, are often a source of energy and reference for straightening and restoring a misguided view of society. OYPMK must not be seen as a citizen who has a ‘mistake’. So, ‘fair’ to be discriminated against from the environment. That is why, this book is entitled “ Removing the Stigma Trail in Lerang Dua”. This book has stories and testimonies about changes before and after the program. There are dozens of stories that represent OYPMK, families, community leaders, medical staff, and the closest government officials and are very aware of the life dynamics of lepers. They gave testimony about what was felt, seen, and obtained by the existence of programs developed by the BesKaR Women’s Foundation and other stakeholders. Programs that seek to provide multi-stakeholder reinforcement to work together in synergy and strategy in presenting an inclusive society. One of the most prominent activities, which is felt by the people of Lerang Dua, is the inclusion garden as a strategy and effort to reduce stigma against lepers and OYPMK. The development of inclusive gardens is also a way to foster economic independence, which in the long term is expected to bring prosperity to them. At the very least, it can meet the food needs of citizens, through organic vegetables that are guaranteed to be healthier. For the completion of this book, I would like to express my gratitude and utmost appreciation to all the speakers, especially OYPMK who courageously shared our life experiences with us, not only authors but also readers. Those inspirational ones are summarized in the book “Removing the Stigma Trail in Lerang Dua”. Thank you to the government of Abbumpungeng Village and all of the staff. Thanks to the regional device organization (OPD) of Bone Regency, each of the Health Offices, the Environmental Service, the Agriculture Service, and the Social Service which have been involved in providing reinforcement to OYPMK to remain confident and contribute to development in Bone Regency. Also to all the staff of the Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR, sincere thanks for the hard work together in empowering OYPMK in Lerang Dua Likewise, a sincere gratitude for the Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR) Indonesia for all their support and attention to our organization and OYPMK who are the direct beneficiaries of the programs that have been supported. Great expectation from the Yayasan Perempuan BesKaR, that this book can provide education, information and motivation to all readers. So, the stigma against Persons Affected by Leprosy (OYPMK) and lepers does not “accumulate” into their crust. Happy reading! Wahidah Rustam

Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

The vast majority of those serving in the U.S. military acknowledge a faith identity, yet many are compelled and even coerced into concealing their faith identity due to overzealous concerns for maintaining good order and discipline. A stigma has been attached to the phrase "for God and country." This leads to a perplexing dilemma: military members are expected to rely on their faith identity as an enabler in the execution of their duties, and are often compelled to conceal expression of their faith. This, if allowed to persist, will degrade readiness across the force. Faith identity has proven an enabler on the battlefield, aiding recruitment, retention, total force fitness, suicide prevention, and military readiness. This dilemma really boils down to a matter of tolerance. A closer look at U.S. religious heritage, military religious constraints, justifiable concerns for caution to religious behavior within the military, and ramifications of overzealousness in stifling military religious accommodations will layout a pathway for remedies to resolve this challenge. Systemic military and public education, a vigilant and responsive process, and collaborative forums will remedy the stigma associated with serving "for God and country."
