Die Anfänge der Geopolitik reichen bis in die Zeiten des deutschen Kaiserreichs zurück. Sie wurde als verwissenschaftlichende Krücke der Politik erdacht, ausgehend davon, dass politisches Handeln sich nach geographischen Regeln zu richten habe. Maßgeblich von erdkundlichen Begebenheiten bestimmt, werden Staaten hier als organische Lebewesen gedacht, die in einer sozialdarwinistischen, ewigen Konkurrenz zueinander, um so genannten Lebensraum kämpfen müssen. Geopolitik diente von Anfang an dazu, Eroberungen vorzubereiten und ideologisch zu rechtfertigen. Bereits im Ersten Weltkrieg erfüllte sie ihre Funktion zur Untermauerung deutschen Herrschaftsstrebens. Die in Europa als geographisch mittig ausgemachte Lage Deutschlands diente etwa als Legitimationsgrundlage für die angestrebte Beherrschung Europas. Unabhängig von der Herrschaftsform wurde Geopolitik im Kaiserreich und in der Weimarer Republik angewendet. Auch die Außenpolitik der Nazidiktatur war davon geprägt und pseudowissenschaftliche Arbeiten der Geopolitik stützten diese argumentativ. Daran anknüpfend konnten NS-Wissenschaftler nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, zum Teil gestützt durch alte Bande, ihre akademische Laufbahn in der BRD fortsetzen. Bereits in den Siebzigern gab es erneute Versuche Geopolitik zu reetablieren und ihr ein unparteiisches Image zu geben, was Mitte der achtziger Jahre in der als Historikerstreit bekannten Auseinandersetzung eine Fortsetzung fand.
