The feminist movement, we have been told, is history. This lively book reveals that on the contrary the feminist movement is alive and kicking, still as engaged with the concerns and ways of seeing as it was in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, still demanding its political place. Renewing Feminisms sets out the claim for a feminism that is renewed, re-invigorated and re-imagined. Renewing Feminisms offers a timely contribution to current debates about lived and imagined feminism today. The contributors, both longstanding feminists and emerging feminist scholars, take a fresh look at feminist critiques and methodologies, recalling the power of past feminist interventions, as well as presenting a new call for future initiatives in media and cultural studies. Re-investigating the past facilitates a claim over the future, and all the contributions to this book make clear that feminism is not only far from over, it is lived and experienced in the everyday, and on personal and political levels. Divided into four key sections, the book revisits major feminist areas, investigating representational issues, those of agency and narrative, media forms and formats, and the traditional boundaries of the public and the private. What emerges is a real intervention into media and cultural studies in terms of how we understand them today.

This book brings together a number of ground-breaking essays that explore the interface of language and gender-consciousness in foundation texts of Judaism and Christianity. Using critical perspectives that derive from a feminist revaluation of traditional religious discourse, the contributors to this volume address basic questions of meaning and interpretive freedom that are integral to a contemporary reading of Scripture and liturgy. They raise such issues as the relevance of a liturgical tradition in which the Deity is addressed in exclusively masculine terms, and the continued viability of scriptural texts that reflect consistently androcentric values. In each of these essays the authors can be seen to respond to the challenge of the feminist critique of patriarchalism in the Western religious tradition, as well as to the perceived need, within contemporary Judaism and Christianity, for new interpretive models for the reading of sacred texts.

The past twenty years have witnessed a renewal of interest in feminist activism on both sides of the Atlantic. In part this has been a response to neoliberal and neoconservative attacks, both implicit and explicit, on the gains made by feminists during the 1960s and 70s. This study adds a comparative dimension to the ongoing analysis of feminism and feminist activism by mapping, analysing and theorising third wave feminisms in the US and Britain. A key addition to Gender and Politics literature, it explores third wave feminisms by situating them within a specific political context, neoliberalism, and in relation to feminist theories of intersectionality, both of which present radical opportunities and practical challenges for feminism and the feminist movement. Elizabeth Evans is Lecturer in Politics at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on gender and politics, including engagement with formal processes and political activism. She has published widely on aspects of feminism, gender and politics, and her previous book, Gender and the Liberal Democrats, was published in 2011.

No Permanent Waves boldly enters the ongoing debates over the utility of the "wave" metaphor for capturing the complex history of women's rights by offering fresh perspectives on the diverse movements that comprise U.S. feminism, past and present. Seventeen essays--both original and reprinted--address continuities, conflicts, and transformations among women's movements in the United States from the early nineteenth century through today. A respected group of contributors from diverse generations and backgrounds argue for new chronologies, more inclusive conceptualizations of feminist agendas and participants, and fuller engagements with contestations around particular issues and practices. Race, class, and sexuality are explored within histories of women's rights and feminism as well as the cultural and intellectual currents and social and political priorities that marked movements for women's advancement and liberation. These essays question whether the concept of waves surging and receding can fully capture the complexities of U.S. feminisms and suggest models for reimagining these histories from radio waves to hip-hop.

Feminisms Is Still Our Name written by Malin Hedley Hayden and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-22 with Art categories.

Feminisms have played a crucial part in art, art history and curatorial practices over the last forty years. Hence, it is by now imperative to scrutinize the history of feminist theories and methods within both fields. Feminisms is Still Our Name is an anthology that critically debates the current status of feminisms in visual art and its relation to past art histories and possible feminist futures. It brings together essays by leading scholars in order to meet the urgent need both for a critical historiography and for re-vitalizations of feminist practices within written as well as visual narratives of modern and contemporary art. From a variety of perspectives, the editors and contributors to this book initiate a much-needed debate about possible strategies for a renewal of feminisms in art history and curating. At the same time, it demonstrates the necessity of further explorations and research into the diversity of feminist pasts. Indeed, this volume provides strong arguments that historiographical critique is an inevitable part of any future feminism(s). In providing fresh approaches to such important fields as feminist art history and feminist curating, the essays assembled in Feminisms is Still Our Name will provoke fruitful discussion about the relation between academic and curatorial feminist practices. Contributors: Renee Baert, Malin Hedlin Hayden, Lolita Jablonskiene, Amelia Jones, Mary Kelly, Griselda Pollock, and Jessica Sjöholm Skrubbe.
