Spanish artist Juan Munoz is well known for his installations and sculptures that often include architectural elements, human figures, and the like in which he takes into account the spatial elements of the exhibition space. This catalogue documents an exhibition of three separate but related installations at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. Here, fabricated and painted human figures are scattered around the gallery in a variety of positions. In "Neal's Last Words" a figure is propped with his forehead against a mirror, perpetually staring at himself; in "Half-Circle," a group of laughing figures are arranged in an arc, and in "Many Times," there are 100 figures, all the same, arranged on a balcony in a variety of groupings. A traveling retrospective of Juan Munoz's work will open in the United States late in 2001.

The significance of Friedrich Nietzsche for twentieth century culture is now no longer a matter of dispute. He was quite simply one of the most influential of modern thinkers. The opening essay of this 1996 Companion provides a chronologically organised introduction to and summary of Nietzsche's published works, while also providing an overview of their basic themes and concerns. It is followed by three essays on the appropriation and misappropriation of his writings, and a group of essays exploring the nature of Nietzsche's philosophy and its relation to the modern and post-modern world. The final contributions consider Nietzsche's influence on the twentieth century in Europe, the USA, and Asia. New readers and non-specialists will find this the most convenient, accessible guide to Nietzsche currently available. Advanced students and specialists will find a conspectus of recent developments in the interpretation of Nietzsche.

Burning With Desire written by Geoffrey Batchen and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-03-15 with Photography categories.

In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the medium's undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.

Marxism And National Identity written by Robert Stuart and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-01 with History categories.

Post-Marxists argue that nationalism is the black hole into which Marxism has collapsed at today's "end of history." Robert Stuart analyzes the origins of this implosion, revealing a shattering collision between Marxist socialism and national identity in France at the close of the nineteenth century. During the time of the Boulanger crisis and the Dreyfus affair, nationalist mobs roamed the streets chanting "France for the French!" while socialist militants marshaled proletarians for world revolution. This is the first study to focus on those militants as they struggled to reconcile Marxism's two national agendas: the cosmopolitan conviction that "workingmen have no country," on the one hand, and the patriotic assumption that the working class alone represents national authenticity, on the other. Anti-Semitism posed a particular problem for such socialists, not least because so many workers had succumbed to racist temptation. In analyzing the resultant encounter between France's anti-Semites and the Marxist Left, Stuart addresses the vexed issue of Marxism's involvement with political anti-Semitism.

"Oscar Masotta (Buenos Aires, 1930- Barcelona, 1979) is all but forgotten now, except perhaps in the field of Lacanian studies. This is because in the 1970s, Masotta would challenge the master psychoanalyst on his own turf, creating his own post-Lacanian school of psychoanalysisin Barcelona. But in 1965, aged just 27, Masotta taught at the University of Buenos Aires, lectured at the Di Tella, and edited a book series on communication and media. A product of the newly open post-Perón era"--Page 91.
