This dissertation examined Repetitive and Restricted Behaviors and Interests (RRBIs) in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We looked at RRBI ratings from the respective subscales of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), a clinician observation, and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-r), a parent developmental history report. The purpose was to explore (1) whether RRBIs total scores diminish as individuals with ASD get older, (2) whether RRBIs are a cohesive, unitary construct or whether there are distinct subtypes of RRBIs, and (assuming that there are RRBIs subtypes) whether these subtypes show different trajectories across age and intellectual functioning, and (3) to what extent the ADOS and ADI-r RRBI subscales cross-validate one other. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses for the ADOS and ADI-r resulted in two-factor models, which we labeled as Cognitive-Restrictive and Motor-Sensory. For total RRBIs, Cognitive-Restrictive RRBIs, and Motor-Sensory RRBIs, adolescents showed significantly lower impairment ratings than younger age groups. Total RRBI ratings were negatively associated with IQ scores for both instruments. However, examining the RRBI subscale scores separately revealed that only Cognitive-Restrictive ratings had a negative association with IQ scores. Ratings for the Motor-Sensory scale were not associated with IQ. On the ADI-r, a significant interaction showed that Cognitive-Restrictive ratings were higher and unchanging for lower-functioning individuals across age groups. Higher-functioning individuals showed lower ratings across each age group. We also found that RRBI items from the ADOS and the ADI-r correlated relatively poorly across the measures. Our study provides evidence for the two-factor model of RRBIs, though distinctions from prior researchers' models are highlighted.

The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) placed a new emphasis on the clinical presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB). There is little research exploring the relationship between RRB and other patient characteristics in large well-characterized samples. This study used a comprehensive measure of RRB to determine how RRB relate to key demographic and clinical features such as gender, age, IQ, adaptive behavior, and problem behaviors. In addition, it examined the relationship between different RRB measures, and how these RRB measures relate to the severity of social communication (SC) symptoms. Data from the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) were used to address these research aims. Correlations, ANCOVA, and logistical regressions were conducted using a sample of 2,759 children with ASD. Analyses revealed varying relationships between RRB and gender, IQ, and problem behaviors. Males were more likely to obtain higher scores on subscales measuring stereotypy and restricted interests. Across full-scale, nonverbal, and verbal IQ, individuals with lower IQ scores were more likely to be reported to have higher rates of all RRBS with the exception of ritualistic/sameness behaviors. Most problem behavior subscales were significantly related to all RRB measures except for the ADOS RRB scores. Results from the regression analyses suggest that overall RRB symptom measures differ in their ability to predict SC criteria. Implications for the current literature, understanding and diagnosis of ASD are discussed and directions for future research suggested.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the use of social stories that integrate a child's particular restricted and repetitive behaviors results in differential social outcomes compared to the use of social stories that do not integrate restricted and repetitive behaviors. A non-concurrent multiple baseline experimental design across participants was used to examine the effects of two Social Story interventions on the frequency of appropriate social behaviors made by participants in a school setting. Field notes were also completed during each day of data collection in order to document the social context, events, activities, moods and behaviors of participants associated with each data collection session. Field notes also included the researcher's thoughts, observations, and reflections on these variables. Overall, the intervention that included participants' restricted interests within the Social Story had the effect of increasing participants' appropriate social behaviors in contrast to the intervention that did not employ restricted interests. This research substantiates the principle that the restricted interests of children with ASD should not be viewed as a form of deficiency that needs to be eliminated. Rather, restricted interests should be viewed as reinforcing agents that increase children's motivation to pursue activities that involve social initiations and interactions with their peers.

Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors (RIRBs) comprise one of the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Considerable evidence indicates that the manifestation of RIRBs is pervasive and associated with persistent interference with the social, communicative, and adaptive functioning in children with ASD. In addition, children's engagement in RIRBs has been associated with limiting family activities and disrupting family interactions. The current study examined the effectiveness of a parent-implemented self-management intervention to target higher-order RIRBs in children with ASD. A non-concurrent multiple baseline design was employed to assess the effects of the intervention on child, parent, and family measures. The results indicate that improvements in behavioral flexibility, observed child affect, parent and child engagement, observed parent affect and confidence, global measures of RIRB symptoms, family functioning, and some changes in parent stress occurred with the implementation of the intervention. These findings have significant theoretical and clinical implications.
