It should have been a time for healing and rebirth… Forced to leave an earth devastated by the spread of Dark Energy, humans of the future head for the planet Zarmina to build a new life. But soon after their arrival, they are faced with another threat to their existence: syconoids. Created first as a unique convergence of thought when hubrid Stella, a cyborg with a human brain, accesses a network of computers back on Earth, this new form of artificial intelligence sees itself as a distinct race that needs to replicate and expand. Using the left-behind humanoid factories on Earth, this communal intelligence creates a physical manifestation of itself—fully sentient, free-thinking syconoids with a superior intellect and body design—and sets out to become the dominant force in the universe. Yet the syconoids soon discover they still need humans for one thing: the brains of newborns so they can take their own evolution to a completely new level. While Stella tries to fulfill the unwilling role cast upon her as the “mother” of a new race and still protect her human and hubrid friends, she attempts convince the syconoids to live peacefully on Zarmina. But when they resist, she finds herself having to make a very difficult choice. In this final book of the Retrogress Trilogy, Conner’s exciting plot explores very real issues around the dangers of technology and artificial intelligence and raises the burning questions of what exactly makes us human, and whether we will survive ourselves.

Rebirth written by Thomas Conner and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-17 with Fiction categories.

Can rebirth come from intentional destruction? And when is it better to abandon a damaged world – or time – than to try to fix it? These are the questions that need to be answered for the future people of Earth, whose home world has been devastated and left without water by the unseen force of Dark Energy. In an attempt to revive the now evacuated planet and reintroduce water to it, scientists force a collision between earth and Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus. Will the planet be saved or must humanity be forced to seek other alternative habitable planets? From their vantage point above Earth in the last starship, all they can do is wait for the dust to settle. Meanwhile, Earth in the present is experiencing staggering leaps in technology, as Dr. Stella Cooke, a present-day human who time travelled to the future and was enhanced by their technology (a hubrid), works to prepare humanity for its planet’s impending devastation. Working with present-day investment capitalists, scientists, and even Homeland Security contacts, Stella introduces humanoids – a combination of tissue engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and fusion power – to the world as well as the hyperspace ship VARRO that is capable of time travel. As the fates of those in the present and the future become hopelessly intertwined, Stella and her associates from both time periods must decide where and when home is and what being a human truly means.

The Cinematic City written by David Clarke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-19 with Art categories.

The Cinematic City offers an innovative and thought-provoking insight into cityscape and screenscape and their inter-connection. Illustrated throughout with movie stills, a diverse selection of films (from 'Bladerunner' to 'Little Caesar'), genres, cities and historical periods are examined by leading names in the field. The key dimensions of film and urban theory are introduced before detailed analysis of the various cinematic forms which relate most significantly to the city. From early cinema and documentary film, to film noir, 'New Wave' and 'postmodern cinema', the contributors provide a wealth of empirical material and illustration whilst drawing on the theoretical insights of contemporary feminism, Benjamin, Baudrillard, Foucault, Lacan, and others. The Cinematic City shows how the city has been undeniably shaped by the cinematic form, and how cinema owes much of its nature to the historical development of urban space. Engaging with current theoretical debates, this is a book that is set to change the way in which we think about both the nature of the city and film. The Cosmic Ocean shares the treasures that Paul K. Chappell, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, who grew up in a violent household, has extracted from trauma. To explain how these treasures—which take the form of timeless truths—can help us solve our personal, national, and global problems, this book uses personal stories and extensive research to journey through time, around the world, and into every facet of the human condition. To survive and progress as a global human family, Chappell explains that we need a paradigm shift that can transform our understanding of peace, justice, love, happiness, and what it means to be human. To help create this paradigm shift, The Cosmic Ocean explores diverse subjects such as empathy, rage, nonviolent struggle, war, beauty, religion, philosophy, science, Gandhi, the Iliad, slavery, human sacrifice, video games, sports, and our shared humanity.

This book presents a comprehensive re-examination of the cinemas of the Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe during the communist era. It argues that, since the end of communism in these countries, film scholars are able to view these cinemas in a different way, no longer bound by an outlook relying on binary Cold War terms. With the opening of archives in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, much more is known about these states and societies; at the same time, the field has been reinvigorated by its opening up to more contemporary concepts, themes and approaches in film studies and adjacent disciplines. Taking stock of these developments, this book presents a rich, varied tapestry, relating specific films to specific national and transnational circumstances, rather than viewing them as a single, monolithic "Cold War Communist" cinema.

Blade Runner written by Amy Coplan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-08 with Performing Arts categories.

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is widely regarded as a "masterpiece of modern cinema" and is regularly ranked as one of the great films of all time. Set in a dystopian future where the line between human beings and ‘replicants’ is blurred, the film raises a host of philosophical questions about what it is to be human, the possibility of moral agency and freedom in ‘created’ life forms, and the capacity of cinema to make a genuine contribution to our engagement with these kinds of questions. This volume of specially commissioned chapters systematically explores and addresses these issues from a philosophical point of view. Beginning with a helpful introduction, the seven chapters examine the following questions: How is the theme of death explored in Blade Runner and with what implications for our understanding of the human condition? What can we learn about the relationship between emotion and reason from the depiction of the ‘replicants’ in Blade Runner? How are memory, empathy, and moral agency related in Blade Runner? How does the style and ‘mood’ of Blade Runner bear upon its thematic and philosophical significance? Is Blade Runner a meditation on the nature of film itself? Including a brief biography of the director and a detailed list of references to other writings on the film, Blade Runner is essential reading for students – indeed anyone - interested in philosophy and film studies. Contributors: Colin Allen, Peter Atterton, Amy Coplan, David Davies, Berys Gaut, Stephen Mulhall, C. D. C. Reeve.
