Dreißig Jahre später versank Mexiko im Drogenkrieg - auch, weil die USA mit den Opiumzerstörungen die Konkurrenz der brutalsten und korruptesten Drogenunternehmer beseitigt hatten. Helena Barop rekonstruiert, warum und seit wann Drogen in den USA als Problem wahrgenommen wurden und wie die Drogenbehörden dieses Problem zu lösen versuchten. Sie zeigt, wie die Drogenpolitik den US-amerikanischen Staat immer wieder an seine Grenzen brachte, und erklärt, warum die globale Drogenprohibition nicht gelingen kann.
