Excerpt from The Twenty-Second Annual Report on the Work of the Fabian Society for the Year Ended 31st March, 1905: Presented to and Adopted by the Annual Meeting of the Society on 12th May, 1905; Also the Rules of the Society For several years past the Society has been largely occupied with working out its collective political policy in relation to events and measures Of immediate national concern. The long conflict over the issues raised by the South African War was succeeded by the struggle over the Education Acts Of 1902 and 1903 and finally the Fiscal Policies of Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Balfour occupied our attention in 1902 and 1903. Our contribution to the last-named controversy was issued on 3ist March, 1904, the last day of the Society's year, and it attracted some attention from serious students Of the subject, though the sale of the Tract has been small. NO fresh political question has come before the country during the year under review, and the Executive Committee felt that the time had arrived when the Society should turn its attention to matters Of less immediate urgency but of even greater ultimate importance. It was therefore determined to attempt to work out in detail a political program for the guidance Of reformers in relation to certain problems some solution Of which in the near future is indispensable. In order to Obtain the assistance of members not on the Executive Committee, and to secure that every proposal made should be discussed by specialists before it was drafted and submitted to the Society, the plan of referring subjects to specially appointed. Committees was revived after some years of desuetude. Electric Power and Transit - The cause Of the appointment Of this, the first, Committee was the introduction into the House of Lords of the Electricity Supply Bill, and the great extension Of power companies throughout Great Britain, coupled with the fact that by law the local authority for electricity is the Borough, Metropolitan Borough, and District Council, whereas in practice a County is, as a rule, too small an area for the economical production Of electricity for the purposes Of power and transit. This committee, under the chairmanship of S. G. Hobson, held six meetings, at which reports on special points, contributed by Boyd Dawson, F. Ackroyd, C. E. Chesterton and E. R. Pease, were read and considered. Finally, the chairman prepared a general report dealing with the whole subject, which was submitted to the Society at a Members' Meeting on November 25th, and was published as Tract no. 119 a few days after the close of the period under review. Gender And American Social Science written by Helene Silverberg and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-09 with Social Science categories.

This collection of essays provides the first systematic and multidisciplinary analysis of the role of gender in the formation and dissemination of the American social sciences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Other books have traced the history of academic social science without paying attention to gender, or have described women's social activism while ignoring its relation to the production of new social knowledge. In contrast, this volume draws long overdue attention to the ways in which changing gender relations shaped the development and organization of the new social knowledge. And it challenges the privileged position that academic--and mostly male--social science has been granted in traditional histories by showing how women produced and popularized new forms of social knowledge in such places as settlement houses and the Russell Sage Foundation. The book's varied perspectives, building on recent work in history and feminist theory, break from the traditional view of the social sciences as objective bodies of expert knowledge. Contributors examine new forms of social knowledge, rather, as discourses about gender relations and as methods of cultural critique. The book will create a new framework for understanding the development of both social science and the history of gender relations in the United States. The contributors are: Guy Alchon, Nancy Berlage, Desley Deacon, Mary Dietz, James Farr, Nancy Folbre, Kathryn Kish Sklar, Dorothy Ross, Helene Silverberg, and Kamala Visweswaran.

Excerpt from A Short Historical Account of the University of Sydney: In Connection With the Jubilee Celebrations, 1852 1902 Some delay occurred in obtaining a title to the land approved by the original grant on the racecourse, where the Sydney Grammar School now stands, but the buildings were at length commenced under the design and direction of Mr. Edward Hallen, and were sufficiently completed to enable a beginning to be made in the year 1835, when the college was Opened under the presidency of Mr. W. T. Cape, with sixty pupils, a number which increased before the expiration of a year to one hundred and forty-two. The success of the institution, however, does not seem to have altogether come up to the expectation of its founders, or its Committee of management, a fact which was possibly in a measure due to the establishment in 1831 of the King's School at Parramatta, and of Dr. Lang's Australian College in Jamieson Street; for we hnd that in 1849 a petition was presented to the Legislative Council from a majority of the proprietors of the Sydney College, praying for the adop tion of measures to convert the institution into an University, and stating their willingness to 'hand it over to any body of persons possessing the means of carrying out this object, reserving to themselves the right of presentation or some corresponding advantage. It was this petition which led to the formation of the University. Upon its presentation to the Legislative Council, it was moved by W. C. Wentworth on September 6th, That a Select Committee be appointed to enquire into the matters contained in the petition of the proprietors of the Sydney College, and report upon the best means of instituting an University for the promotion of literature and science, to be endowed at the public expense. The motion was agreed to with the omission of the words in italics, so that the Committee might be free to recommend such steps as seemed best adapted to the needs of the community without reference to any existing institution.
