The idea that merging municipalities will improve local services and economic competitiveness has its roots deep in the nineteenth century. Municipalities in the US were first merged as early as 1848. However, despite being merged at the turn of the twentieth the city of New York was effectively bankrupt by 1975. In contrast metropolitan Boston - often seen as a recent success story in global competition - comprises 282 distinct municipalities. Outside the United States, forced municipal mergers were a popular policy in many European countries and Canadian provinces during the 1960s and 1970s. The city of Laval, just north of Montreal, and the "unicity" of Winnipeg owe their origins to this period – both amalgamations failed to meet their original objectives. Despite the emergence of "public choice" theory - which justifies municipal fragmentation on market principles - some politicians and public servants in the 1990s have continued to advocate municipal amalgamations as a means of reducing public expenditure, particularly in Ontario. In Merger Mania Andrew Sancton demonstrates that this approach has generally not saved money. He examines the history of amalgamation, as well as studying recent forced municipal mergers in Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, and Sudbury. In the concluding chapter he examines the case for municipal amalgamation on the Island of Montreal and argues that those who would abolish locally elected municipal councils are obligated to explain very carefully - especially in light of evidence to the contrary - exactly why they think such drastic measures are necessary. A compelling examination of a timely issue, Merger Mania is a must-read for anyone interested in the politics of city governments. Andrew Sancton is professor of political science at University of Western Ontario and the author of several books on city politics.

Management Crisis And Business Revolution written by John Harte and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Business & Economics categories.

Management Crisis and Business Revolution describes the enormous gap between business theories on the one hand, and the realities of the workplace and uncertainties of the marketplace on the other. In place of reasoned management and disciplined organization John Harte depicts daily disorder, vagueness, and confusion; instead of the logical processes of classroom case histories with rational solutions. He provides tales of an abundance of irrational judgments, personal foibles, and business follies. Once a top operational manager with multinational organizations, Harte applies his hands-on knowledge of the business world to a realistic examination of workplace conditions. He describes methodically how to handle human limitations in the average business enterprise, as well as how to develop management strengths. The author observed superior and inferior management firsthand, and therefore witnessed the painful demise of many companiessome of which, in his opinion, could have been saved. With thirty years' experience to draw on, he analyzes why so many businesses and products fail, while others succeed. He examines the amazing progress of Japan and other Pacific Asian countries; explains the decline of German, Canadian, British, and French management practices; and provides strategies for the marketplace. The business sectors described in this all-encompassing book include: high-technology, fast-moving packaged consumer goods like detergents; manufacturing and retailing consumer durables like furniture and appliances; soft goods; fashion products; service sector industries; manufacturing, wholesaling, and retail trade; and a whole range of new service industries. Harte stresses that while management and trade are timeless, dedication in the West has declined. The challenge is how to manage change by innovating, and replacing senile customs, systems, and institutions with more progressive ones suited to the new business environment. This unusually tough

The Rise Of The New West written by John F. Conway and has been published by James Lorimer & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-30 with Business & Economics categories.

This one-volume history chronicles a 150-year history of dramatic changes in fortune and attitudes in western Canada. From the Riel Rebellions and the Winnipeg General Strike to the founding of the CCF, Social Credit, and Reform parties, Canada's West has always been a hotbed of political, social, and economic change. In the early twentieth century those calls for change emanated from the left as farmers and workers fought for social and economic justice. In the past two decades, the protests and calls for change emanated from the right as the region gained a new role for itself in Canada. This history chronicles the rise and fall of such figures as Grant Devine, Bill Vander Zalm, Glen Clark, Roy Romanow, Stockwell Day, and Lorne Calvert -- and the emergence of Stephen Harper and the federal Conservatives. It describes how the West, the political wellspring of progressive changes over the years, has been transformed into the bastion of the right, culminating in the virtual annihilation of the NDP in Saskatchewan, the cradle of social democracy in Canada. This is the updated fourth edition of John Conway's classic book originally published under the titleThe West.

The West written by Conway, John F. and has been published by James Lorimer & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with History categories.

In time for Alberta's and Saskatchewan's 100th anniversary of Confederation, political commentator and writer John Conway examines the unique way the West has shaped the rest of Canada. The Riel Rebellions, the Winnipeg General Strike, the founding of the CCF, Social Credit and Reform parties, the struggle for provincial control of resources -- much of the impetus for political, social and economic change in Canada has come from the West. From pre-Confederation to the present, author John Conway, himself a Westerner, tells the story of the colourful and controversial figures who molded the region. His lively history of the West and its peoples offers insight into the experience of Western Canadians and documents their contribution to Canadian economic and political life. The third edition of this popular and successful history describes Stephen Harper's arrival on the political scene, as well as the rise and fall of such figures as Grant Devine, Bill Vander Zalm, Glen Clark, Roy Romanow, and Stockwell Day. It also describes how the West, the cradle of Canadian social democracy, was transformed into the bastion of the right during the last decade.
