Flooding of coastal communities is one of the major causes of environmental disasters world-wide. This textbook explains at a basic level, how sea levels are affected by astronomical tides, by weather effects that generate extreme flooding events, and over the longer term by ocean circulation and climate trends. It also indicates how sea level changes are related to changing risks, coastal dynamics, geology and biology; and outlines some of the economic and legal implications. Based on courses taught by the author in the UK and the USA, this book is aimed at undergraduate students at all levels, with the text developed in such a way that non-basic mathematics is confined to Appendices and a web site (http://publishing.cambridge.org/resources/0521532183/). Changing Sea Levels will also interest and inform professionals in many fields including hydrography, coastal engineering, geology, biology and also coastal planning and economics.

This volume treats the key aspects that must be known when dealing with continuous space geodetic or terrestrial geodetic observations. The signals of Earth core resonance are discussed, as well as tidal effects on Earth polar motion and on earthquake triggering. Hydrologic loading, be it ocean tides or subsurface water flows, is discussed. These signals compete with crustal deformation observations of earthquakes (e.g., Gorkha 2015) during interseismic periods, and on volcanoes (Elbrus, Caucasus). The instrumentation that is covered includes superconducting gravimeters, continuous seafloor gravimeters, interferometric tilt and strain meters, and GNSS networks. The articles give an up-to-date account of research in which the Earth tides are a benchmark signal for the sophisticated instrumentation mounted on satellites or the surface, observing time-variable signals of an evolving Earth. Scientists studying the earthquake cycle and geodetic monitoring will find useful material. For students in the geosciences, the collection offers a good overview of the broad spectrum of topics related to the Earth geodetic monitoring.

Empirical Model For Tides In The Western North Atlantic Ocean written by Harold O. Mofjeld and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975 with Tides categories.

This report describes an empirical tide model for the western North Atlantic ocean which predicts the semi-daily and daily tides relative to mean sea level. The model interpolates harmonic constants from three reference stations on a Mercator projection to obtain constants at a given location, from which the tides are then computed. The geographic region over which the model predicts tides within a standard deviation of 5 cm was determined through a comparison with data from test tide stations. A set of FORTRAN subroutines and their use are described, allowing a user to implement the model. Minor modifications of two subroutines are required to extend the period of the model 1973-1978 to either earlier or later periods.
