Excerpt from Uniform Crime Reports for the United States: Printed Annually 1967 Perhaps never in our history has there been such widespread concern over crime and the capability of our criminal justice agencies to contend with it. The passage of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 is the result of a national demand for public order. This far-reaching Act, signed into law by the President, promises substantial financial and functional sup port to local and state law enforcement agencies. Achievement of this Act's objective - to improve the performance of law enforcement - will depend on wise application of the funds available and sound implementation of the Act's provisions by state and local agencies. As I stated on these pages last year, a vital need within the state is effective criminal justice statistical programs. Crime statistics are necessary if the states are to know the extent and nature of the crime problem and be in a position to intelligently plan for and evaluate their criminal justice systems. These programs are an essential part of statewide computerized information systems which are rapidly being developed. The fbi has been providing assistance to a number of states during the past several years in developing statewide programs of police statistics and stands ready to afford such assistance to all states upon request. The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act offers the states financial help in developing and implementing such systems, including a collection of police statistics. Uniform Crime Reports provides this country's only nationwide view of crime. This Program does present a practical measure of this Nation's most common local crime problems. Like the collection of other mass social data, it cannot be statistically pure. The development of state programs of police statistics will further improve the quality and completeness of Uniform Crime Reports. Certainly, any national collection of complete criminal justice statistics will require standards that can be obtained only through centralized state programs. Excerpt from Uniform Crime Reports for the United States: 1980 With the issuance of Crime in the United States - 1980, we in law enforcement reflect on the decade of the 705 with mixed emotions. It would appear that the concerted efforts of law enforcement at all levels of government have yet to find a panacea in the fight against crime. The decade saw a 50-percent increase in crimes reported to law enforcement as measured by the Crime Index. There were only 2 years - 1972 and l977 - when we experienced a respite; all other years were characterized by increases. Students of the crime problem have pointed to various reasons for the growth in reported crime during the last 10-year period. Among these were a higher sensitivity on the part of the public in reporting crimes that were heretofore unreported, an economic situation conducive to the commission of crime, and a lowering of the threshold of risk in being prosecuted for the commission of a crime. While these or other reasons may explain that 50 percent increase, the fact still remains that our society was and is faced with a burdensome social problem. Crime is a major concern; its reduction has to be a, national responsibility. If we are to enter the decade of the 803 with the legacy of the 705, then the task of law enforcement becomes even more onerous. As shown by the phenomenon of the past 10 years, law enforcement alone cannot cope with this grave social ill. The Right Way To Do Wrong written by Harry Houdini and has been published by Cosimo, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-01 with Social Science categories.

The legendary Harry Houdini started the tradition of magicians debunking charlatans and revealing secrets of the trade that continues today through the likes Penn and Teller or James "The Amazing" Randi. But Houdini went even further here, in this delightful 1906 novelty: he revealed the working secrets of thieves, swindlers, and con artists. Culled from his conversations with "the chiefs of police and the most famous detectives in the world," Houdini's tales of the tricks of the trade of beggars, pickpockets, and burglars are instructive and amusing. The master showman was also a surprisingly entertaining writer-and this is one of his most enjoyable books, one that will enthrall readers of true crime as well as fans of Houdini himself. Hungarian-American magician and professional skeptic EHRICH WEISS (1874-1926)-aka Harry Houdini, "Handcuff King and Jail Breaker"-also wrote Magical Rope Ties and Escapes (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924).

World Development Report 2005 written by World Bank and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Economic development categories.

Firms and entrepreneurs of all types-from microenterprises to multinationals-play a central role in growth and poverty reduction. Their investment decisions drive job creation, the availability and affordability of goods and services for consumers, and the tax revenues governments can draw on to fund health, education, and other services. Their contribution depends largely on the way governments shape the investment climate in each location-through the protection of property rights, regulation and taxation, strategies for providing infrastructure, interventions in finance and labor markets, and broader governance features such as corruption. The World Development Report 2005 argues that improving the investment climates of their societies should be a top priority for governments. Drawing on surveys of nearly 30,000 firms in 53 developing countries, country case studies, and other new research, the Report explores questions such as: What are the key features of a good investment climate, and how do they influence growth and poverty? What can governments do to improve their investment climates, and how can they go about tackling such a broad agenda? What has been learned about good practice in each of the main areas of the investment climate? What role might selective interventions and international arrangements play in improving the investment climate? What can the international community do to help developing countries improve the investment climates of their societies? In addition to detailed chapters exploring these and related issues, the Report contains selected data from the World Bank's new program of Investment Climate Surveys, the Bank's Doing Business Project, and World Development Indicators 2004-an appendix of economic and social data for over 200 countries. This Report offers practical insights for policymakers, executives, scholars, and all those with an interest in economic development.
