We live in an unprecedented era of flourishing of scientific publishing. However, many professionals in the biomedical sciences find writing articles to be a daunting task. Sharing knowledge is what drives scientific progress - each new advance or innovation in biomedical research builds on previous observations. However, for experimental findings to be broadly accepted as credible by the scientific community, they must be verified by other researchers. An essential step is for researchers to report their findings in a manner that is understandable to others in the scientific community and provide sufficient information for others to validate the original results and build on them. In recent years, concern has been growing over a number of studies that have failed to replicate previous results and evidence from larger meta-analyses, which have pointed to the lack of reproducibility in biomedical research. On September 25 and 26, 2019, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public workshop in Washington, DC, to discuss the current state of transparency in the reporting of preclinical biomedical research and to explore opportunities for harmonizing reporting guidelines across journals and funding agencies. Convened jointly by the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation; the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders; the National Cancer Policy Forum; and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health, the workshop primarily focused on transparent reporting in preclinical research, but also considered lessons learned and best practices from clinical research reporting. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop.

It is a distinct pleasure to be invited to prepare a short Foreword to Biomedical Research: How to plan, publish and present it, by William F. Whimster. Ninety years have elapsed since T. Clifford Allbutt, the Regius Professor of Physic at the University of Cambridge, published his c1assic work of 1904 Notes on the Composition of Scientific Papers. Small in size, but deep in wisdom, it remains a remarkably useful, if slightly old-fashioned, book, still weIl worth reading. Since 1904, and particularly in the last 25 years, there has been an avalanche of books on scientific style. Medawar has aptly observed that "most scientists do not know how to write, insofar as style betrays I' homme meme, they write as if they hated writing and want ed nothing more than to have done with it. " Whimster's book has a broader objective than most of this genre. Unlike Allbutt, who was addressing in the main those who were writing their theses to obtain the MD, Whimster writes for the young medical scientists who are planning and writing up an account of their research, either for pub lication in scientific journals, or for presentation of the scientific material at meetings. Whimster, a scientist and an experienced long term science editor, has written an up-to-date version of an earlier and very successful volume, Research, How to Plan, Speak and Write About It, edited by C. Hawkins and M. Sorgi.

It is obvious that the information explosion in biotechnology is crossing traditional boundaries (e. g. , ref. 14). This volume is the second of several that are intended to inform both the biomedical community and interested intelligent laymen of the political and economic implications of biomedical research.
