Excerpt from Reports on the Water Supply of San Francisco: 1900 to 1908, Inc Upon the settling up of the peninsula in 1849-50 the necessity of a water supply was met by springs and wells at several points within the limits of the city. The soil being unpolluted, these nearby sources were safe, but soon failed to meet the rapidly growing demand. Water was then brought from springs and streams in Marin County and distributed to homes, restaurants, hotels, shipping, etc., in buckets and casks (as is now being done). In 1851 the Mountain Lake Water Company undertook to bring the water of Mountain Lake and Logos Creek into the city, and made a contract with the city of date June 1, 1851. (City Manual, page 117, Ordinance No. 167.) This ordinance was amended and the time extended from time to time. In 1857 the San Francisco Water Works was organized and succeeded in bringing in the water of Logos Creek around the shores of Golden Gate, by tunnel through Fort Point, and flume to Black Point, where it was pumped to suitable elevations. Water was introduced on September 16, 1858. This company and the previous one, the Mountain Lake Water Company, had numerous suits at law. The Mountain Lake Water Company failed in 1862 and went out of business. In the meanwhile George H. Ensign organized the Spring Valley Water Works under a charter obtained from the legislature. He took up a small spring near the intersection of Mason and Washington streets and laid a few pipes in 1858. He kept this franchise alive by extensions of time until 1860, when it was bought by a stronger company. (This company retained the name of Spring Valley Water Works until 1904, when for the purpose of overreaching the state law, which limits the bond issue to the amount of stock, it doubled its capital stock so as to issue an equivalent volume in bonds. It then changed its name to Spring Valley Water Company). The stronger company organized in 1860 proceeded at once to actually bring in a supply from San Mateo County and introduced 2,000,000 gal. per day from Pilarcitos Creek in 1862. Litigation. - There then existed the two companies: (1) The old San Francisco Water Works, bringing in its supply from Logos Creek via Fort Point to Black Point and pumping into reservoirs and mains. (2) The reorganized Spring Valley Water Works, bringing in the gravity supply of 2,000,000 gal. per day from Pilarcitos via Lake Honda. There was no litigation and no trouble about water for municipal purposes. But in February, 1865, the two companies "consolidated," or the Spring Valley Water Works "bought out" the other. In 1867, or two years later, there commenced a series of litigations which have continued until the present, notably the ten years' litigation in which the city won the somewhat barren victory under the late John F. Swift, and the litigation now in progress in the United States courts, ostensibly for adjusting rates, but evidently to get a high valuation fixed for cither rates or selling out. During the past three centuries, California has stood at the crossroads of European, Asian, Native American and Latino cultures, and seen the best and worst of multiracial and multi-ethnic interaction. The Human Tradition in California captures the region's rich history and takes readers into the daily lives of ordinary Californians at key moments in time. Professors Davis and Igler have selected essays that emphasize how individual people and communities have experienced and influenced the broad social, cultural, political and economic forces that have shaped California history. Organized chronologically from the pre-mission period through the late-twentieth century, this book taps into the whole spectrum of Californian experience and offers new perspectives on the state's complex social character. The story is personalized through the use of mini-biographies, drawing readers directly into the narrative.

Bay Cities And Water Politics written by Sarah S. Elkind and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

Combining insights from urban, western, and environmental history, Elkind examines the ways that people's reactions to their natural surroundings drive both demand for improved public services and political reform. She traces public works development in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to explain how these programs united each city with its suburban neighbors, creating new political entities and allowing Boston and Oakland to appropriate rural resources and thus overcome the environmental limits to their continued growth and prosperity. She also shows how, when the power of regionalism is turned to urban development, environmental and social costs are sometimes overlooked.

* “We see through this book the immense power of language…to change the minds of lawmakers and tourists alike.” —The New York Times Book Review * “A poignant portrait of an era when mere words could change the world.” —San Francisco Chronicle * The dramatic and uplifting story of legendary outdoorsman and conservationist John Muir’s journey to save Yosemite is “a rich, enjoyable excursion into a seminal period in environmental history” (The Wall Street Journal). In June of 1889 in San Francisco, John Muir—iconic environmentalist, writer, and philosopher—meets face-to-face for the first time with his longtime editor Robert Underwood Johnson, an elegant and influential figure at The Century magazine. Before long, the pair, opposites in many ways, decide to venture to Yosemite Valley, the magnificent site where twenty years earlier, Muir experienced a personal and spiritual awakening that would set the course of the rest of his life. Upon their arrival the men are confronted with a shocking vision, as predatory mining, tourism, and logging industries have plundered and defaced “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.” While Muir is devastated, Johnson, an arbiter of the era’s pressing issues in the pages of the nation’s most prestigious magazine, decides that he and Muir must fight back. The pact they form marks a watershed moment, leading to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and launching an environmental battle that captivates the nation and ushers in the beginning of the American environmental movement. “Comprehensively researched and compellingly readable” (Booklist, starred review), Guardians of the Valley is a moving story of friendship, the written word, and the transformative power of nature. It is also a timely and powerful “origin story” as the towering environmental challenges we face today become increasingly urgent.

Bracing For Disaster written by Stephen Tobriner and has been published by Heyday.ORIM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-01 with Architecture categories.

“The first history of seismic engineering in San Francisco . . . spiced with survivor and eyewitness accounts. ”—Midwest Book Review For the past one hundred and fifty years, architects and engineers have quietly been learning from each quake and designing newer earthquake-resistant building techniques and applying them in an ongoing effort to save San Francisco. Bracing for Disaster is a fresh appraisal of a city responding to repeated devastation. In the language of a skilled teacher, Tobriner examines what really happened during the city’s earthquakes—which buildings were damaged, which survived, and who were the unsung heroes. Filled with more than two hundred photographs, diagrams, and illustrations, this is a revealing look at the history of buildings by a true expert, and it offers lessons not just for San Francisco but for any city beset by natural disasters. “The real saga is how a fast-growing city grapples with the reality that it has more to worry about than fires and fog. The core of the story is fairly technical, rooted in the crude intuitive ways in which builders reacted to a seismic threat they could neither measure nor define. But Tobriner crafts the story well.”—SFGate
