Together they reveal the oppositional tensions between tradition and innovation, and the inspiration this provides for contemporary artistic practice, either through conscious implementation or through rejection of past definitions. Engagement with these cultural performances and objects provide new possibilities for the creation of current identities. The drafting of antiquities legislation, the tortuous journeys objects have taken to find a place in galleries, the use of exhibitions in cultural exchange, framed by the architecture of museums, as well as the role of film and photography in appropriating Pacific art culture for emerging nationalisms, all of these are considered here to enhance our understanding of indigenous art's place in the world today. These historical perspectives provide the framework in which to explore contemporary acquisition and outreach work with Pacific communities that seeks to reconnect people with objects taken away from the places and intentions of their makers. Questions of how identity is maintained and expressed through art are considered for both individuals and groups. What role does the transformations of objects play in this process? What impacts have been made by colonialism, modernism and the great migrations of people between Pacific countries, and from rural to urban environments? Ultimately, how is 'Pacific Islander' defined and by whom? In Repositioning Pacific Art, artists, curators and academics, including Maori and other Islanders, bring fresh approaches to Oceanic Art History and raise questions of relevance not only to scholars of indigenous art in the region but also in other parts of world.

South Pacific Museums: Experiments in Culture is a collection of outstanding analyses of museums in the South Pacific, written by cultural, museum and architectural critics, and historians. A series of snapshots introduce the reader to key museums in the region and longer essays explore these museums in broad terms.Over the last 50 years, museums have been regarded by many scholars and cultural critics as archaic institutions far from the cutting edge of cultural innovation. This judgement is being proved wrong across the globe, with innovative museums staking out new territory. Nowhere is this more striking than in the South Pacific where new and redeveloped institutions have included the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Museum of Australia, the Melbourne Museum, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the Museum of Sydney, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre in the Torres Strait, the Auckland Museum, the Centre Culturel Tjibaou and the Vanuatu Cultural Centre.South Pacific Museums make sense of these museums as part of the complex field of heritage, where national economies meet global tourism, cities brand themselves, and indigeneity articulates with colonialism. The effect is one of cultural experimentation. The Fifth International Symposium of the Pacific Arts Association, titled "Art, Performance, and Society," called for papers in sessions dealing with "Production and Performance," "Social and Cultural Context," "The Record and the Remainder," and "The Mission of Museums." In all, some sixty papers were presented, twenty-four of which have been included in this book. The first two topics elicited several papers that explored the creative process, including the description and analysis of performance, and the taxonomy of objects used, the transmission of cultural knowledge, and the identity and work of individual artists. The second two topics provided the opportunity for papers on some significant early museum collectors and collections, various methods of documenting cultural material (such as photography), how cultural material has been and can be exhibited, and the role of museums and cultural centers in Pacific Island countries.

The Festival of Pacific Arts, initially known as the South Pacific Arts Festival, has grown from the 1st edition with 1000 participants from 20 countries to the Festival of Pacific Arts with close to 3000 delegates from 27 countries. The concept for a regional festival originated from the Fiji Arts Council in 1965. They envisioned a festival put on by and for Pacific peoples; a festival built upon the tradition of both sharing and passing cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. Working to facilitate this vision, the Fiji Arts Council and the South Pacific Commission (now Pacific Community) combined their resources to host the 1st South Pacific Festival of Arts, in 1972. Since that time, twelve Festivals have taken place.
