Ce livre est consacré à deux théories majeures pour les études sémantiques contemporaines : la Théorie des représentations du discours, et la Théorie des quantificateurs généralisés. La Théorie des représentations du discours introduit en sémantique une perspective dynamique sur l'interprétation, et étend le domaine de la sémantique formelle au discours. Depuis le travail fondateur de Hans Kamp en 1981, le point de vue et le langage de représentation de cette théorie sont largement utilisés en linguistique. La Théorie des quantificateurs généralisés (Barwise et Cooper, 1981 ; Keenan et Stavi, 1986) offre à l'analyse linguistique un concept de quantification beaucoup plus puissant et flexible que celui de la logique du premier ordre. Le premier objectif de cet ouvrage est de donner une introduction à ces deux théories. On a cherché à rendre cette introduction accessible aux non spécialistes, et à l'illustrer au moyen d'exemples empruntés au français. La seconde partie du livre traite de la contribution de ces travaux à l'analyse de données complexes du français dans le domaine de la détermination nominale et de l'anaphore. On reprend sur ces bases nouvelles la typologie des groupes nominaux, et particulièrement la nature des catégories linguistiques de l'indéfini et du défini, en précisant ce qui les distingue de la quantification proprement dite.

Ce livre est une introduction a la semantique formelle. Il s'adresse principalement a des etudiants en sciences du langage, mais aussi a des etudiants en mathematiques ou en logique qui auraient envie de connaitre les applications de leur discipline au domaine linguistique. La semantique formelle est l'etude du sens, principalement des phrases (mais aussi des discours), basee sur deux principes qui sont abondamment developpes ici: la veri-conditionnalite (comprendre le sens d'une phrase c'est comprendre quand elle est vraie relativement a une situation donnee) et la compositionalite (le sens d'une unite superieure s'obtient par composition des sens des unites qui la constituent). Son etude necessite donc des connaissances en logique qui incluent la logique propositionnelle, la logique des predicats voire la theorie des mondes possibles (pour les logiques dites modales). Mais ce livre pose aussi la question du caractere suffisant ou non de la logique classique. Il aborde en effet des sujets (comme la representation du temps et de l'aspect ou bien la representation des pluriels) qui semblent requerir autre chose (topologie, mereologie, voire logique lineaire).

On impute communement au contexte le sens particulier du mot (marcher, p.ex.) dans l'enonce (le commerce marche). Or, il n'est pas difficile de trouver des enonces - comme en tete du cortege marche le commerce - dans lesquels l'influence s'exerce dans le sens oppose. Cela revient au constat que le contexte est autant source que cible des influences semantiques. Ne s'ensuit-il pas que la recherche semantique est condamnee a la circularite: decrire l'unite par recours aux criteres contextuels et en meme temps decrire le contexte en s'appuyant sur l'unite ? Le cercle est bien reel dans le cadre des theories formellees ou l'on considere la structure semantique comme simple et homogene et ou la signification de la phrase est concue comme la somme des significations de ses constituants. Il en va autrement des cadres theoriques ou la structure concue comme complexe, comportant en son sein variation et hierarchie. Chaque constituant peut alors contribuer a la signification de la phrase par toute une gamme de sens potentiels dont l'un ou l'autre se realise suivant le jeu varie de facteurs multiples tels que le sens des unites avoisinantes, la situation de l'echange linguistique, les savoirs culturels, l'experience du monde. L'etude du contexte nous conduit a deux demarches: d'une part, un reexamen des modeles semantiques mais aussi des principes theoriques et des fondements epistemologiques qui les sous-tendent; d'autre part des enquetes pour confronter les theses avancees aux donnees recoltees dans le comportement et l'intuition du sujet parlant. Le rapport unite/contexte n'est pas le seul paradoxe; sont aussi paradoxales les relations sens/situation, sens/culture, semantique/pragmatique, langage/pensee, ... que l'ouvrage tente d'eclairer d'un jour nouveau dans la perspective d'une structure relative et ouverte

This book presents comparisons of recent accounts in the formalization of natural language (dynamic logics and formal semantics) with informal conceptions of interaction (dialogue, natural logic and attribution of rationality) that have been developed in both psychology and epistemology. There are four parts which explore: historical and systematic studies; the formalization of context in epistemology; the formalization of reasoning in interactive contexts in psychology; the formalization of pathological conversations. Part one discusses the Erlangen School, which proposed a logical analysis of science as well as an operational reconstruction of psychological concepts. These first chapters provide epistemological and psychological insights into a conceptual reassessment of rational reconstruction from a pragmatic point of view. The second focus is on formal epistemology, where there has recently been a vigorous contribution from experts in epistemic and doxatic logics and an attempt to account for a more realistic, cognitively plausible conception of knowledge. The third part of this book examines the meeting point between logic and the human and social sciences and the fourth part focuses on research at the intersection between linguistics and psychology. Internationally renowned scholars have contributed to this volume, building on the findings and themes relevant to an interdisciplinary scientific project called DiaRaFor (“Dialogue, Rationality, Formalisms”) which was hosted by the MSH Lorraine (Lorraine Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities) from 2007 to 2011.

This volume explores the interpretation of indefinites and the constraints on their distribution by paying particular attention to key issues in the interface between syntax and semantics: the relation between the semantic properties of indefinite determiners and the denotation of indefinite DPs, their scope, and their behaviour in generic and conditional sentences. Examples come from French, other Romance languages and English. Central to the proposed analyses is a distinction between two types of entities, individualized entities and amounts. Weak indefinites are analyzed as existential generalized quantifiers over amounts and strong indefinites as either Skolem terms or generalized quantifiers over individualized entities. The up-to-date review of the literature and the new falsifiable proposals contained in this book will be of particular interest to linguistics students and scholars interested in the cross-linguistic semantics of indefinites.

This volume brings together studies in the domain of weak referentiality, the phenomenon that a definite or indefinite noun phrase lacks its usual referential force.
