Analyzes the coverage and opinions of eight German newspapers, ranging over the whole political spectrum, during major crises of the early years of the Weimar Republic, including their attitude to antisemitism. While antisemitic hate propaganda was central to the Nazi "Völkischer Beobachter", it was not lacking in several of the other newspapers. In 1919, the (Catholic) Zentrum's "Germania" associated Jews with Bolshevism as well as with war profiteering. The "Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten" opposed immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe; the "Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger" pressed for their internment and expulsion. The last three papers, especially "Germania", later became more moderate in their references to Jews. The "Frankfurter Zeitung" condemned antisemitism. The socialist and communist organs generally avoided Jewish issues and interpreted antisemitism as a right-wing political tactic. In the spring of 1933, German society was deeply divided – in the Reichstag elections on 5 March, only a small percentage voted for Hitler.
