Com este Requiem, Antonio Tabucchi, ao contar a experiência de uma viagem misteriosa e sapiencial, escreveu um livro que é um acto de amor a um país que lhe pertence profundamente e à língua na qual este livro está escrito.Antonio Tabucchi nasceu em Pisa(1943-2012), onde fez os seus estudos, primeiro na Faculdade de Letras e depois na Scuola Normale Superiore. Ensinou nas Universidades de Bolonha, Roma, Génova e Siena. Foi Visiting Professor no Bard College de Nova Iorque, na École de Hautes Études de Paris e no Collège de France. Publicou 27 livros, entre romances, contos, ensaios e textos teatrais. As suas obras estão traduzidas em mais de 40 países. Recebeu numerosos prémios nacionais e internacionais. Sozinho, ou com Maria José de Lancastre, traduziu para italiano a obra de Fernando Pessoa. Considerando que a sua pátria é também a língua portuguesa, escreveu um romance em português, Requiem, 1991. O seu teatro foi levado ao palco, entre outros, por Giorgio Strehler e Didier Bezace. O Fio do Horizonte, Nocturno Indiano, Afirma Pereira e Requiem foram adaptados ao cinema respectivamente por Fernando Lopes, Alain Corneau, Roberto Faenza e Alain Tanner.

Originally published as O Ateneu in 1888, The Athenaeum is a classic of Brazilian literature, here translated into English in its entirety for the first time. The first-person narrator, Sergio, looks back to his time at the eponymous boarding school, with its autocratic principal and terrifying student body. Sergio’s account of his humiliating experiences as a student, with its frank discussion of corruption and homoerotic bullying, makes it clear that his school is structured and administered so as to reproduce the class divisions and power structure of the larger Brazilian society. In its muckraking mode, the novel is in the spirit of Naturalism, imported from France and well-acclimated to Brazil, where it blossomed. At the same time, Pompéia maintains the novel’s credibility as a bildungsroman by portraying the narrator’s psychological development. The novel’s conclusion suggests both a doomed society and its possible redemption, indicative of a moment of upheaval and transition in Brazilian history.
