The 'history of ideas', better known these days as intellectual history, is a flourishing field of study which has been the object of much controversy but hardly any historical exploration. This major new work from Donald R. Kelley is the first comprehensive history of intellectual history, tracing the study of the history of thought from ancient, medieval and early modern times, its emergence as the 'history of ideas' in the 18th century, and its subsequent expansion. The point of departure for this study is the perspective opened up by Victor Cousin in the early 19th-century on 'Eclecticism' and its association with the history of philosophy established by Renaissance scholars. Kelley considers a broad range of topics, including the rivalry between 'ideas' and language, the rise of cultural history, the contributions of certain 19th- and 20th-century practitioners of the history of ideas in interdisciplinary areas of philosophy, literature and the sciences, and finally the current state of intellectual history. The central theme of the book is the interplay between the canon of philosophical thought and the tradition of language and textual study, the divergence of the latter marking the 'descent of ideas' into the realm of cultural history.

L’Âge de l’éloquence démontre l’utilité, pour l’historien de la culture, du paradigme rhétorique. La première partie apprécie la longue durée : Antiquité classique et tardive, Renaissance italienne et Réforme catholique. On y voit s’établir et se rétablir dans la culture européenne la fonction essentielle de médiation, de transmission et d’adaptation exercée par la rhétorique. Les débats relatifs au " meilleur style ", à la légitimité et à la nature de l’ornatus, à la définition de l’aptum, ne sont pas le privilège de professionnels de la chose littéraire : ils mettent en jeu, à chaque époque, l’ensemble du contenu de la culture et impliquent la stratégie de son expansion et de sa survie. Les parties suivantes examinent respectivement deux grandes institutions savantes de la France humaniste, le Collège jésuite de Clermont et le Parlement de Paris. A l’horizon apparaissent le public féminin et le public de cour, que la res literaria savante et chrétienne ne saurait ignorer sans se condamner à la stagnation ou à l’étouffement. Les débats rhétoriques entre jésuites ou entre magistrats gallicans oscillent donc entre la nécessité de ne rien sacrifier de l’essentiel, et l’autre nécessité, celle de doter cet " essentiel " d’une éloquence propre à le faire aimer, admirer, embrasser par les "ignorans ". Autant de débats qui se nourrissent de l’abondante jurisprudence accumulée par la tradition humaniste et chrétienne. Le classicisme surgit ainsi, dès le règne de Louis XIII, comme une solution vivante et efficace à un problème qui n’a rien perdu de son actualité : comment transmettre la culture en évitant le double péril de la sclérose élitiste et de la démagogie avilissante ?
