R.G.MILES XHP Consulting Ltd, Gloucester. This book is one of two volumes containing papers for presentation at the British Computer Society Expert Systems 98 conference. This is the annual conference of th the BCS Specialist Group on Expert Systems and is in its 18 year. During its lifetime it has established itself as the premier Expert Systems conference in the UK. The conference is attracting an increasing number of papers world-wide and this year in excess of 70% were from research groups outside the UK. This volume includes all papers accepted for the Technical Stream of Expert Systems 98 and presented at the conference in December 1998. The papers within this stream present innovative, new research work. The companion volume, Applications and Innovations in Expert Systems VI, includes all papers accepted for the application stream of the conference. This stream has become the premier European conference on applications of Expert Systems. The papers accepted for presentation within the Technical Stream cover a broad range of research within Expert Systems and fit into four broad categories: ontological frameworks, knowledge base development, classifiers and neuro-fuzzy systems. The award for best Technical paper has been made to David McSherry, from the University of Ulster, for his paper entitled "Strategic Induction of Decision Trees".

Following on from a three-year knowledge management project, seven organisations formed aco-operative group for knowledge management. This group meets through the Knowledge Management Implementers Forum (KMIF). Each of the organisations participating in this work are, by implication, interested in the development of KM. The aims of the forum are t9 exchange ideas and share experience in the areaofknowledge management. The organisations involved are: ~ British Aerospace (Samlesbury) ~ ICI ~ ICL ~ North WestWater ~ IDS Cad-Graphics ~ Liverpool John Moores University ~ NWAIAG (Blackburn College) 1.1 The Organisations Involved Each ofthe organisations has specific reasons for being involved in this project and in KM. The British Aerospace Samlesbury site is a large manufacturing site employing ground breaking technology for Europe's front line military aircraft. The factory works with a well-managed supply chain and works closely with other British Aerospace sites in the manufacture of aircraft components. It has set up a partnership with another Aerospace Company based on exchange of knowledge and therefore needs to value that knowledge. ICI is one of the UK's leading chemical companies and plays on an international stage. Changes in international supply and demand require ICI to respond quickly to market pressures. This means that the company needs to use its knowledge assets in a well managed way and put systems in place that increase the flexibility and ensure the security ofthese important assets.

If a manufacturing company's main goal is to sell products profitably, protecting production systems from defects is essential and has led to vast documentation and expert knowledge. Industry 4.0 has facilitated access to sensor and operational data across the shop floor, enabling data-driven models that detect faults and predict failures, which are crucial for predictive maintenance to minimize unplanned downtimes and costs. Commonly, a universally applicable machine learning (ML) approach is used without explicitly integrating prior knowledge from sources beyond training data, risking incorrect rediscovery or neglecting already existing knowledge. Integrating expert knowledge with ML can address the scarcity of failure examples and avoid the learning of spurious correlations, though it poses technical challenges when combining Semantic Web-based knowledge graphs with neural networks (NNs) for time series data. For his research, a physical smart factory model with condition monitoring sensors and a knowledge graph was developed. This setup generated the required data for exploring the integration of expert knowledge with (Siamese) NNs for similarity-based fault detection, anomaly detection, and automation of root cause analysis. Patrick Klein applied symbolic and sub-symbolic AI techniques, demonstrating that integrating expert knowledge with NNs enhances prediction performance and confidence in them while reducing the number of learnable parameters and failure examples.

th 2002 DEXA, the 13 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 2–6, 2002, at the Université Aix–Marseille II, France. The quickly growing field of information systems required the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (the DaWaK conference, EC-Web conference, eGOV conference and DEXA workshops), and there were held in parallel with DEXA, also in Aix-en-Provence. The resulting book was prepared with great effort. Starting with the preparation of submitted papers, the papers went through the reviewing process. The accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged to the conference program. This year 241 papers were submitted and our thanks go to all who have contributed. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether about 730 referee reports, on average three reports per paper, and selected 89 papers for presentation. The papers presented here encompass the extensive domain of databases; together with the other conferences and workshops of the DEXA event cluster a vast part of applied computer science was covered. In this way DEXA has blazed the trail. At this point we would like to acknowledge to all institutions which actively supported this conference and made it possible. These are: • IUT (Université Aix – Marseille II), • FAW, • DEXA Association, • the Austrian Computer Society, • and Microsoft Research

Operational Expert System Applications in Europe describes the representative case studies of the operational expert systems (ESs) that are used in Europe. This compilation provides examples of operational ES that are realized in 10 different European countries, including countries not usually examined in the standard reviews of the field. This book discusses the decision support system using several artificial intelligence tools; expert systems for fault diagnosis on computerized numerical control (CNC) machines; and expert consultation system for personal portfolio management. The failure probability based troubleshooting expert system for the Airbus A-310; automatic diagnosis of rotating machinery faults; and expert system for naval resource allocation are also covered. This publication is suitable for researchers and specialists interested in the operational expert system applications in Europe.
