The conference was organised by SGAI, the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (previously known as SGES). The papers in this volume present new and innovative developments in the field, divided into sections on Machine Learning, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Knowledge Acquisition, Constraint Satisfaction, Scheduling and Natural Language Processing. This year's prize for the best refereed technical paper was won by a paper entitled Covering the Path Space: A Casebase Analysis for Mobile Robot Path Planning by M Kruusmaa (Department of Mechatronics, Tallinn Technical University, Estonia) and J Willemson (Department of Computer Science, Tartu University, Estonia). SGAI gratefully acknowledges the long-term sponsorship of Hewlett-Packard Laboratories (Bristol) for this prize, which goes back to the 1980s. This is the nineteenth volume in the Research and Development series. The Application Stream papers are published as a companion volume under the title Applications and Innovations in Intelligent Systems X. On behalf of the conference organising committee I should like to thank all those who contributed to the organisation of this year's technical programme, in particular the programme committee members, the referees and our administrators Linsay Turbert and Helen Forster.

The papers in this volume comprise the refereed proceedings of the conference Arti- cial Intelligence in Theory and Practice (IFIP AI 2010), which formed part of the 21st World Computer Congress of IFIP, the International Federation for Information Pr- essing (WCC-2010), in Brisbane, Australia in September 2010. The conference was organized by the IFIP Technical Committee on Artificial Int- ligence (Technical Committee 12) and its Working Group 12.5 (Artificial Intelligence Applications). All papers were reviewed by at least two members of our Program Committee. - nal decisions were made by the Executive Program Committee, which comprised John Debenham (University of Technology, Sydney, Australia), Ilias Maglogiannis (University of Central Greece, Lamia, Greece), Eunika Mercier-Laurent (KIM, France) and myself. The best papers were selected for the conference, either as long papers (maximum 10 pages) or as short papers (maximum 5 pages) and are included in this volume. The international nature of IFIP is amply reflected in the large number of countries represented here. I should like to thank the Conference Chair, Tharam Dillon, for all his efforts and the members of our Program Committee for reviewing papers under a very tight de- line.

The book presents state of the art practices and research in the area of Knowledge Capture and Reuse in industry. This book demonstrates some of the successful applications of industrial knowledge management at the micro level. The Micro Knowledge Management (MicroKM) is about capture and reuse of knowledge at the operational, shopfloor and designer level. The readers will benefit from different frameworks, concepts and industrial case studies on knowledge capture and reuse. The book contains a number of invited papers from leading practitioners in the field and a small number of selected papers from active researchers. The book starts by providing the foundation for micro knowledge management through knowledge systematisation, analysing the nature of knowledge and by evaluating verification and validation technology for knowledge based system of frameworks for knowledge capture, reuse and development. A number integration are also provided. Web based framework for knowledge capture and delivery is becoming increasingly popular. Evolutionary computing is also used to automate design knowledge capture. The book demonstrates frameworks and techniques to capture knowledge from people, data and process and reuse the knowledge using an appropriate tool in the business. Therefore, the book bridges the gap between the theory and practice. The 'theory to practice' chapter discusses about virtual communities of practice, Web based approaches, case based reasoning and ontology driven systems for the knowledge management. Just-in-time knowledge delivery and support is becoming a very important tool for real-life applications.

Swallowing sound recognition is an important task in bioengineering that could be employed in systems for automated swallowing assessment and diagnosis of abnormally high rate of swallowing (aerophagia) [1], which is the primary mode of ingesting excessive amounts of air, and swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia) [2]-[5], that may lead to aspiration, choking, and even death. Dysphagia represents a major problem in rehabilitation of stroke and head injury patients. In current clinical practice videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is the gold standard for diagnosis of swallowing disorders. However, VFSS is a ti- consuming procedure performed only in a clinical setting. VFSS also results in some radiation exposure. Therefore, various non-invasive methods are proposed for swallowing assessment based on evaluation of swallowing signals, recorded by microphones and/or accelerometers and analyzed by digital signal processing techniques [2]-[5]. Swallowing sounds are caused by a bolus passing through pharynx. It is possible to use swallowing sounds to determine pharyngeal phase of the swallow and characteristics of the bolus [2].

This book documents the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Cognitive Modeling (ICCM), which brought together researchers from diverse backgrounds to compare cognitive models; evaluate models using human data; and further the development, accumulation, and integration of cognitive theory. ICCM provides a worldwide forum for cognitive scientists who build computational cognitive models and test them against empirical cognitive data. New features of the conference included the Newell Award for best student paper, the Siegel-Wolf Award for best applied research paper, and a Doctoral Consortium which provided an opportunity for students to meet their peers and mentors and to explore their dissertation work in an intense but friendly, multi-approach environment. These new features, as well as a comprehensive view of the posters presented at the conference are offered in this volume.
