This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Salamanca Declaration (UNESCO, 1994) which began the global movement towards inclusive education for students with special educational needs (SEN). Inclusive education for this student group represents a paradigm shift in providing quality education for all students. Around the globe, this universal ideal has progressed a strengths-based approach to student learning and encouraged mixed-ability classrooms. Notwithstanding this milestone, recent studies have highlighted persistent disparities in the formulation and implementation of inclusion policies, inadequacies in teacher preparation, and imbalances in access to resources. Factors such as these continue to pose challenges in achieving truly inclusive education for students with SEN. Given this context, it is both timely and essential to undertake a critical reassessment of the inclusive education agenda for this student group. While policy frameworks may emphasize inclusion, their real-world translation often falls short, leading to gaps between intention and realization. Moreover, the limited enactment of evidence-based practices at school and classroom levels continue to impede student engagement and learning. Current research indicates that while islands of excellent mainstream inclusive practice do exist the educational experience for many students on the autism spectrum can often be one of hostility, inconsistency and unreliability. Without appropriate understanding of best practice educational methods, these students can present an inordinate educational challenge to both parents and educators alike. How do parents deal with such complex educational profiles? How do they continue to maximize their children’s development over time? What are the barriers that hinder their quest? What are the facilitators that help their quest? To answer these questions, this book provides an in-depth, recent examination of the real life journeys of families who attempted to gain an appropriate education for their children on the autism spectrum including the areas of diagnosis, early intervention, mainstream schooling, home education, segregated schooling and transition to work and further study. Jasmine McDonald BA DipEd MSpecEd (Hons) PhD, is affiliated with the Telethon Kids Institute, University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. Her current work includes trialling a peer-to-peer mentoring program for tertiary students on the autism spectrum. Children and young people are often discussed as if they are homogenous groups. The reality is, of course, very different, with an enormous variation within each of these groups and in any domain of experience pertaining to childhood or adolescence. Driven by personal, sociocultural, geographic, or economic circumstances, many children and young people worldwide are experiencing a totally different reality to those who fit with more mainstream patterns of childhood. This has substantial implications for their sociophysical environmental experience and our understanding of their physical environmental needs.
