The research supported by this grant has been focused on the physics relevant to the construction and use of state of the art high current, high brightness, ultra-relativistic electron beams in the energy range from 0.25 GeV to 1.1 GeV, namely, the 1 GeV Duke storage ring system. During this period, the Duke storage ring was commissioned and used for: production of coherent Uv radiation (from the OKA XUV EEL); production 0 spontaneous X-ray radiation: and production of a monochromatic gamma ray beam. A number of very successful theoretical results have been developed and tested. Most objectives specified in the proposal have been achieved. A number of initial objectives for the Duke storage ring have been exceeded during the commissioning of the storage ring and its subsystems. This research has led to the creation of a unique facility capable of producing high brightness electron beams with parameters exceeding initial design goals. These beams have been utilized for ground breaking achievements with the OKA FEL system, including the first and only UV FEL in the US and the first and only monochromatic gamma ray beam with tunable energy.

This proceedings volume records the advances in quantum beam physics since the first meeting in Monterey (1998). In addition to further progress regarding quantum effects in beam dynamics, photon-electron interaction in beam handling, beam phenomena under strong fields, and quantum methodologies in beam physics, the newly introduced topics — the physics of condensed beams as well as astro-beam physics and laboratory astrophysics — have also been well documented by world experts in the field. This book should be a valuable reference to those who are interested in the joint frontiers of beam physics and other fields such as astrophysics and condensed matter physics.

Focuses on the common recurring physical principles behind sophisticated modern devices This book discusses the principles of physics through applications of state-of-the-art technologies and advanced instruments. The authors use diagrams, sketches, and graphs coupled with equations and mathematical analysis to enhance the reader’s understanding of modern devices. Readers will learn to identify common underlying physical principles that govern several types of devices, while gaining an understanding of the performance trade-off imposed by the physical limitations of various processing methods. The topics discussed in the book assume readers have taken an introductory physics course, college algebra, and have a basic understanding of calculus. Describes the basic physics behind a large number of devices encountered in everyday life, from the air conditioner to Blu-ray discs Covers state-of-the-art devices such as spectrographs, photoelectric image sensors, spacecraft systems, astronomical and planetary observatories, biomedical imaging instruments, particle accelerators, and jet engines Includes access to a book companion site that houses Power Point slides Modern Devices: The Simple Physics of Sophisticated Technology is designed as a reference for professionals that would like to gain a basic understanding of the operation of complex technologies. The book is also suitable as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate non-major students interested in physics.

This volume covers a broad range of topics focusing on atoms, molecules, and clusters interacting in intense laser field, laser induced filamentation, and laser plasma interaction and application. The PUILS series delivers up-to-date reviews of progress in Ultrafast Intense Laser Science, a newly emerging interdisciplinary research field spanning atomic and molecular physics, molecular science, and optical science, which has been stimulated by the recent developments in ultrafast laser technologies. Each volume compiles peer-reviewed articles authored by researchers at the forefront of each their own subfields of UILS. Every chapter opens with an overview of the topics to be discussed, so that researchers unfamiliar to the subfield, as well as graduate students, can grasp the importance and attractions of the research topic at hand; these are followed by reports of cutting-edge discoveries.
