In recent years there has been a significant shift within social work practice towards recognising the expertise of people with a lived experience. As a result service user involvement is now embedded into curricula. Throughout this textbook, service users and carers detail their experiences of interventions including being detained under the Mental Health Act, having a child removed to a place of safety and having a carer's assessment. In meeting professional standards such as the Professional Capabilities Framework, students and social workers are required to take into account service user perspectives, and to collaborate with them to achieve positive outcomes. Chapters end with advice to social workers directly from contributors, providing invaluable perspectives on different intervention situations. There is specific focus on statutory social work throughout, as well as an exploration of broader implications of interventions, the underpinning legislation, policies and research.

Much has been missed by social researchers in their attempt to understand the human experience as a series of rational, cognitive choices. What comes under the rubric of "lived experience" fits no researcher's model other than, in the words of one of the volume's contributors, "one damned thing after another." Human subjectivity in lived experience, both that of the subject and of the researcher, is the topic of Investigating Subjectivity, an important corrective to the cool, disdainful stance of most previous social research. The dozen contributors examine various aspects of subject--the emotions, the gendered nature of experiences, the body-mind relationship, perceptions of time, place and setting, understanding of the self--and how these elements provide a fuller understanding of the human condition, incorporating subjectivity into research requires a new set of methods--systematic introspection, self-ethnography, staged readings, poetry, stories--many of which are demonstrated in the book. It also requires a focus on mundane (minor ailments, media images, hobbies) and extraordinary (exotic trips, earthquakes, abortion experience), elements, which make up the bulk of lived experience, and how people react to these life events. Investigating Subjectivity stands out from any other books in the field because the emphasis is on research rather than theory or conceptualization. This outstanding volume is quality reading for academicians and undergraduate and graduate students in sociology, cultural studies, qualitative methods. and communication, especially those interested in emotions, narration, textual analysis, and symbolic interaction.

Social Research And Disability written by Ciaran Burke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-29 with Social Science categories.
Social Research and Disability argues that the contemporary rules of sociological methods outlined in numerous research methods texts make a number of assumptions concerning the researcher including ambulance, sight, hearing and speech. In short, the disabled researcher is not considered when outlining the requirements of particular methods. Drawing upon these considerations, the volume emphasizes how disabled researchers negotiate the empirical process, in light of disability, whilst retaining the scientific rigour of the method. It also considers the negative consequences arising from disabled researchers’ attempts at "passing" and the benefits that can emerge from a reflexive approach to method. This innovative and original text will, for the first time, bring together research-active academics, who identify as being disabled, to consider experiences of being disabled within a largely ableist academy, as well as strategies employed and issues faced when conducting empirical research. The driving force of this volume is to provide the blueprints for bringing how we conduct social research to the same standards and vision as how the social world is understood: multi-faceted and intersectional. To this end, this edited collection advocates for a sociological future that values the presence of disabled researchers and normalises research methods that are inclusive and accessible. The interdisciplinary focus of Social Research and Disability offers a uniquely broad primary market. This volume will be of interest not only to the student market, but also to established academics within the social sciences.

The two volumes on Music Performers’ Lived Experiences seeks to widen this research area through close investigations of a variety of rich, complex and nuanced experiences classical music performers have qua performers, as they interact with musical scores, instruments, performance traditions, other musicking individuals, wider artistic and cultural discourses, norms and beliefs. The two volumes aim to “humanise” music performers and contribute towards shaping a more performer-centred discipline of Music Performance Studies. The first volume, Music Performers’ Lived Experiences: Theory, Method, Interpretation, brings together internationally renowned scholars, who capture and scrutinise, through a variety of methods, a wide range of experiences performers have—as well as the personally meaningful lived experience narratives performers construct—presenting vivid portraits of music performers as artists situated in unique socio-cultural, historical, embodied and discursive contexts. The topics discussed include the construction of the idea of “the composer” from lived experiences of performing, manifestations of wisdom in the ways performers make sense of their experiences, joys of sight-reading, performer agency, lived experience as the basis of performance analysis, emotional labour of working with controversial repertoire, performance anxiety dreams of music performers, experience of working across musical genres, the nature of intersubjective experiences in music-making, absorption, and subjective bodily sensations in performance. Readers will come away from the book with fresh insights about and an enhanced understanding of the infinitely rich lifeworld of music performers.

Co-Design is an approach used in healthcare that integrates patient and care-partner experiences into service and program development and delivery. Co-design involves both users and healthcare professionals or researchers working together to identify opportunities for improvement, set goals, evaluate progress and outcomes, and reflect on processes. Implementing a co-design process improves person-centered care and results in positive outcomes for both patients and staff. Research in this area has increased significantly over the previous 15 years, however, much of this work has been focused on primary care. It is important to focus on the use of co-design in rehabilitation settings specifically due to the unique goals of these programs. The goal of this Research Topic is to highlight the use of co-design in rehabilitation programming and to value the knowledge and experience of those with lived experience who use rehabilitation services. The insights gained will provide a foundation for future rehabilitation program development.
