Researching Discourse Competence In Monologic L2 Performance written by Claudia Vásquez Fernández and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-02 with Education categories.
This book introduces you to an exploration of discourse competence as a core component of successful second language (L2) communication, highlighting its role to promote overall intelligibility levels in L2 learner performance. In doing so, this volume promotes the examination of L2 learner output from a discourse-oriented perspective through the articulation of discourse competence in terms of textual resources of cohesion and coherence, thus making the construct both instructable and researchable. Building on decades of L2 performance research, particularly within the Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach, this book explores the potential of planning time as a pedagogical tool to promote discourse competence in second language (L2) learners and enhance overall levels of intelligibility in oral task-performance. Including guidelines for investigating L2 learner performance and lesson plans for the practical teaching of discourse resources in the L2 classrooms, this book promotes research of discoursal aspects of L2 learner task-performance and the implementation of an overall discourse-oriented perspective in the L2 classroom. This book constitutes a valuable resource for researchers, university students, instructors, and academics involved in the L2 teaching and learning field thus making it an essential reading for professionals in applied linguistics and language teaching associations worldwide.

This book introduces the main concepts of pragmatics as they relate to the young English language learner classroom and research with young second language learners (YLLs). It considers the speech acts which are particularly relevant to YLLs and presents research findings on learners’ development of speech act perception and production. It provides pre- and in-service second language (L2) teachers, teacher educators and researchers with an understanding of young learners’ pragmatic development and with ideas for research-based approaches and specific classroom activities to help foster speech act development in the YLL classroom. Moving beyond the research methods traditionally employed in L2 pragmatics research, it also demonstrates how participant-centred data elicitation methods can be effective when conducting research with children. This book will appeal to researchers, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in applied linguistics and TESOL, as well as pre- and in-service primary school L2 teachers and teacher educators.

Methods in current instructed second language acquisition research range from laboratory experiments to ethnography using non-obtrusive participant observation, from cross-sectional designs to longitudinal case studies. Many different types of data serve as the basis for analysis, including reaction times measurements, global test scores, paper and pencil measures, introspective comments, grammaticality judgements, as well as textual data (elicited or naturalistic, oral or written, relating to comprehension or production). Some studies rely on extensive quantification of data, while others may favour a more qualitative and hermeneutic analytic approach. Many of these issues and methods are exemplified by the contributions to this volume. Data-based studies included here deal with the acquisition of specific linguistic phenomena (e.g. verb and noun morphology, lexicon, clause structures) in a range of target languages (e.g. English, French, German, Russian) from a variety of settings involving different instructional approaches (e.g. traditional foreign language classes, immersion classes, intensive ESL classes, content and language integrated language classes). Collectively, the chapters in this book illustrate the productivity and diversity of current research on instructed second language acquisition. As such they serve as a valuable resource for researchers in SLA, psycholinguistics, linguistics, and language education.
