Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. Throughout the seventeenth century Dutch, French, and English freebooters launched numerous assaults on Spanish targets all over Central America. Many people have heard of Henry Morgan and François L’Olonnais, who led a series of successful raids, but few know that the famous buccaneers often operated in regions inhabited and controlled by Native Americans rather than Spaniards. Arne Bialuschewski explores the cross-cultural relations that emerged when greedy marauders encountered local populations in various parts of the Spanish empire. Natives, as it turned out, played a crucial role in the outcome of many of those raids. Depending on their own needs and assessment of the situation, indigenous people sometimes chose to support the colonial authorities and sometimes aided the intruders instead. Freebooters used native guides, relied on expertise and supplies obtained from local communities, and captured and enslaved many natives they encountered on their way. This book tells the fascinating story of how indigenous groups or individuals participated in the often-romanticized history of buccaneering. Building on extensive archival research, Bialuschewski untangles the wide variety of forms that cross-cultural relations took. By placing these encounters at the center of Raiders and Natives, the author changes our understanding of the early modern Atlantic World and the role that native populations played in the international conflicts of the seventeenth century.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo principal el análisis de las dinámicas sociales y posibles patrones y modelos de ocupación espacial desarrollados por los distintos grupos culturales que habitaron la denominada área cultural Tairona, en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, en un marco cronológico que abarca aproximadamente desde el siglo X hasta los años finales del siglo XVI. Se han usado como fuentes los principales trabajos arqueológicos desarrollados en la región, los documentos del Archivo General de Indias de Sevilla, del Archivo General de la Nación en Bogotá y de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, los informes, mapas, diseños, proyectos y cuadernos de trabajo conservados en la Biblioteca del Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia, así como del Centro de Documentación de la Fundación Pro Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. También los diarios o crónicas de viajeros, publicadas a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX. Los constructores de esta gran civilización que ocuparon las caras norte y occidental de la Sierra Nevada, elaboraron una de las culturas más complejas del Caribe y menos estudiadas también. En su lucha por la sobrevivencia, estos pueblos tuvieron que desarrollar sofisticadas estrategias de adaptación y manejo, no solo de un medio donde se habían asentado, muy complejo, duro y difícil, sino además frente a una progresiva presión de los invasores europeos desde principios de siglo XVI, que los fueron encajonando en los lugares más altos y más inaccesibles de la Sierra, hasta que, después de un largo proceso de resistencia que duró casi cien años, estas dinámicas fueron deshechas por la invasión castellana, los asentamientos se vieron paulatinamente incapacitados para su correcto funcionamiento, y acabaron fatal y forzosamente despoblados. Así, en estas páginas tratamos de estudiar y conocer, con la rigurosidad del estudio científico, una de las más complejas y completas sociedades de la historia de la humanidad en el continente americano; y tratamos también de aprender de ellas, de su sabiduría y de su formidable capacidad de organización, que les hizo posible crecer, crear y desarrollarse de la manera como lo hicieron. No hay ciudades olvidadas, porque la memoria de los pueblos siempre es obstinada.

Santa Marta es la ciudad más antigua del hemisferio occidental continental. El adelantado sevillano Rodrigo de Bastidas fundó la ciudad el 29 de julio de 1525, por lo que en 2025 se cumplirán 500 años de presencia española en este territorio. A partir de ese momento, Santa Marta estuvo bajo el mando de un gobernador español, quien ejercía la autoridad civil y militar sobre el territorio de su jurisdicción. El dominio español se prolongó por cerca de tres siglos, periodo durante el cual ejercieron su oficio unos ochenta y cinco gobernadores, caracterizados en su mayoría por la brevedad de su gobierno. Para conocer la historia de algunos de los gobernadores más importantes de esta provincia, la Universidad del Magdalena y el Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia (ICANH), con el apoyo del Centro Cultural del Banco de la República en Santa Marta, impulsaron la publicación de este libro que llena un vacío en la historiografía samaria y del Caribe colombiano. La obra se compone de once capítulos que abordan las acciones políticas, administrativas y militares de catorce gobernadores de la provincia de Santa Marta, que se extienden temporalmente desde su fundación en 1525 hasta la derrota de los realistas en 1820.
