Successful family enterprises are incredible engines for generating wealth and expressing the owning family's values about business and the community. These values may be expressed through the quality of their goods and services, relationships with employees, business and community, and philanthropy. But only a small fraction of the families that create businesses are able to sustain them for more than a single generation. The few surviving enterprises are huge and have a powerful impact on the community, global commerce, and the environment. They also have a strong influence on family members and all those touched by the family's various enterprises. This paper describes the journey of long-term resilient families over three to more than six generations. These families pursue business opportunities together while passing their legacy values, culture and resources to each new generation. While few family enterprises reach this milestone, those that do amass impressive resources.

Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Edinburgh (Business School ), language: English, abstract: The reasons of the successful longevity of many family businesses compared to the short life span of others are not far different from the reasons that glue together family members in a tied long-term relationship. In fact, especially after some generations, when the numbers of members would grow, blood linkages are not enough to guarantee the continuity of the relationship among family members. What makes family relationship last longer are shared values and sense of belonging. In our analysis of three well-established companies, Arco, Musgrave group and Berry Bro & Rudd Limited, we noticed that also family companies’ longevity secret lies in these same principles that maintain together family members through different generations. Adopting family values and extending them to the company culture will determine the long-term survival of family relationship with the business. In the three companies we examined the internal understanding of family’s values appear to define the entire organization’s behaviours.

Most family enterprises do not outlive the first generation. But a few survive for several generations, with a thriving business and a unified family. What causes them to beat the odds?We interviewed family leaders from 38 families that have successfully made it through at least two generational transitions. We call them Generative Families, because they have not dissipated the family wealth, but rather used the wealth as a creative force to allow them to grow, develop, innovate and share the benefits of their wealth widely across several generations. this study presents their stories-in their own words-about how they approached each transition. Through 18 case studies we illustrate how each family organized its family and business or financial affairs, thus parting the curtain on very public and highly private families. While we have protected our respondents' confidentiality, their stories shed light on their internal values, organization and activities, and how they overcame often-significant crises and conflicts.

Family businesses are vital to the health of a nation’s economy, but distresses such as economic downturns and the Covid-19 pandemic can put them at grave existential risk. Drawing from her dynamic experience working with her family-owned company MPIL Steel Structures Ltd, Priyanka Gupta Zielinski presents a unique manual to help family businesses thrive, even in times of crisis. Central to it is a survival toolkit – featuring a metaphorical multipurpose hat, a flashlight, a superhero cape, a Swiss Army knife and a parachute – which prepares business owners to face any challenge head on. The book also reveals how the improvisational style of family enterprises can be leveraged better for sustainability, while identifying in their close-knit structure and community-driven approach avenues for meaningful social change. Replete with anecdotes and effective strategies – with an occasional Haryanvi idiom thrown into the mix – The Ultimate Family Business Survival Guide is a must-read for family business and MSME owners everywhere.
