Sounds From The Other Side written by Elliott H. Powell and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-03 with Music categories.

A sixty-year history of Afro–South Asian musical collaborations From Beyoncé’s South Asian music–inspired Super Bowl Halftime performance, to jazz artists like John and Alice Coltrane’s use of Indian song structures and spirituality in their work, to Jay-Z and Missy Elliott’s high-profile collaborations with diasporic South Asian artists such as the Panjabi MC and MIA, African American musicians have frequently engaged South Asian cultural productions in the development of Black music culture. Sounds from the Other Side traces such engagements through an interdisciplinary analysis of the political implications of African American musicians’ South Asian influence since the 1960s. Elliott H. Powell asks, what happens when we consider Black musicians’ South Asian sonic explorations as distinct from those of their white counterparts? He looks to Black musical genres of jazz, funk, and hip hop and examines the work of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Rick James, OutKast, Timbaland, Beyoncé, and others, showing how Afro–South Asian music in the United States is a dynamic, complex, and contradictory cultural site where comparative racialization, transformative gender and queer politics, and coalition politics intertwine. Powell situates this cultural history within larger global and domestic sociohistorical junctures that link African American and South Asian diasporic communities in the United States. The long historical arc of Afro–South Asian music in Sounds from the Other Side interprets such music-making activities as highly political endeavors, offering an essential conversation about cross-cultural musical exchanges between racially marginalized musicians.

The Afro Asian Century written by Andrew F. Jones and has been published by Positions: East Asia Cultures this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

The Afro-Asian Century begins the task of excavating a multitude of Afro-Asian connections and collaborations in the twentieth century. With few exceptions, area studies and cultural studies have neglected or underestimated the significance of transethnic and transnational exchanges between African and Asian peoples. By bringing instances of Afro-Asian traffic in the realms of politics, economics, and culture to the foreground, this collection maps an alternative global circuit. The issue examines the non-Eurocentric form of cosmopolitanism that emerged from creative encounters of racialized people in Jazz Age Paris, the Harlem Renaissance, and colonial Shanghai. It reconceptualizes the Indian Ocean as a crucial site for Afro-Asian cross-pollination and investigates the cinematic culture of kung fu as a global discourse of Afro-Asian anti-imperialism. Convened at a time of great upheaval around the world, at the height of the Cold War, armed conflict in Vietnam, and a period of nationalist and anti-colonialist struggles, the Bandung Asian-African Conference of 1955 was an unprecedented and unrepeated moment of unity of purpose among the 29 independent Asian and African nations represented there, and for some years a beacon of hope for the two goals of nonalignment and Afro-Asian solidarity. It is widely considered the inspiration that led to the eventual founding of the Non-Aligned Movement. This timely book, published at the 50th annniversary of the conference, charts the historical background that led to it, recounts the heady mix of events of the one week at Bandung - its spirit of unity as well as its near derailments - analyses its impacts and aftermath, and above all provides an insight into the political landscape of the world before, during and after this landmark event. Supplementing the text is a rich array of illustrations, historical photographs and maps, highlighting the people, places and issues involved. Book jacket.

Global Jazz: A Research and Information Guide is an annotated bibliography that explores the global impact of jazz, detailing the evolution of the African American musical tradition as it has been absorbed, transformed, and expanded across the world’s historical, political, and social landscapes. With more than 1,300 annotated entries, this vast compilation covers a broad range of subjects, people, and geographic regions as they relate to interdisciplinary research in jazz studies. The result is a vivid demonstration of how cultures from every corner of the globe have situated jazz—often regarded as America’s classical music—within and beyond their own musical traditions, creating new artistic forms in the process. Global Jazz: A Research and Information Guide presents jazz as a common musical language in a global landscape of diverse artistic expression.
