Offers illuminating essays by passionate and well-recognized American Catholic intellectuals on the interaction between faith and work. By envisioning Catholicism as a cultural force that shapes morality, the arts, creativity, cultural conversation, social justice, spirituality and vocation, the authors invite educational leaders and intellectuals to take seriously their holy work -- of teaching others how to understand and engage the world from a Catholic perspective. Stemming from nearly a decade of conferences sponsored by Collegium, a consortium of sixty Catholic colleges and universities, this book offers new ways of connecting the content and concerns of Catholic faith to intellectual life across academic disciplines. This book helps form a community of inquiry around the issues central to Catholic intellectual enterprise.

Religion throughout its history has been used to justify dominance and rightness, a narrative that sadly continues today. St. Francis of Assisi, however, fell in love with a Christ who cultivated humility and connection rather than power and division. This Christ of humility and poverty—depicted by Ilia Delio, OSF, in this Franciscan classic—invites us to contemplate a theology that can heal the separation within ourselves and our divided world today.

As a historical figure, there are no absolutes about Jesus. Each religious tradition, from Catholic to Quaker to Pentecostal to Buddhist, perceives him differently. Scholars have seen him as prophet, hero, lord, martyr and rebel. These countless varying images of Jesus have all influenced history, the arts, culture, and social political thought. Jesus: The Complete Guide distils 2000 years of thinking about Jesus into a single intriguing volume. In nearly 200 A-Z entries, internationally recognised scholars summarise views of Jesus from the Gospel writers to contemporary theologians. Not only does the book explore Christian history, thought and worship, it also examines the position of Jesus in the traditions of other world religions, such as Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. The encyclopaedia also explores the changing image of Jesus in art, sculpture, music and literature, pulling disparate fields of study into one powerful resource. Scholars, students of theology and world religions, and other interested readers will all welcome this unique work of reference.

The book starts with the development of Salesian youth ministry in the post-Vatican II period. The change from a faithful and repetitive education towards a critical and future-centered approach brought multiple risks. Focusing on organizational aspects, we analyze the underlying theories and their anthropological paradigms, especially Management by Objectives. Then we turn back to the original and permanent criterion for any renewal - the experience of Don Bosco in the Valdocco Oratory. His leadership and management qualities, recent leadership concepts, solid bases of the Salesian Youth Ministry and creative experiments are sewn creatively together in an innovative proposal: 1. Creation of an integral anthropological framework; 2. Development of a set of virtues-qualities at the level of action mentality, shared leadership and operative management; 3. Proposal of a transformational project cycle that merges planning, community building and discernment.

A Reader in Early Franciscan Theology presents for the first time in English key passages from the Summa Halensis, one of the first major installments in the Summa genre for which scholasticism became famous. This systematic work of philosophy and theology was collaboratively authored mostly between 1236-45 by the founding members of the Franciscan school, such as Alexander of Hales and John of La Rochelle, who worked at the recently-founded University of Paris. Modern scholarship has often dismissed this early Franciscan intellectual tradition as unoriginal, merely systematizing the Augustinian tradition in light of the rediscovery of Aristotle, paving the way for truly revolutionary figures like John Duns Scotus. But as the selections in this reader show, it was this earlier generation that initiated this break with past precedent. The compilers of the Summa Halensis first articulated many positions that eventually become closely associated with the Franciscan tradition on issues like the nature of God, the proof for God's existence, free will, the transcendentals, and Christology. This book is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the ways medieval thinkers employed philosophical concepts in a theological context as well as the evolution of Franciscan thought and its legacy to modernity.
