Until now, there has only been a shallow understanding of how the leadership actions of project managers interact with ethics and social responsibility. Empirical research into this subject has been sparse. Responsible Leadership, by Nicholas Clarke, Alessia D’Amato, Malcolm Higgs, and Ramesh Vahidi is the first study to investigate how the relationships among managers, team members, and other stakeholders can bring about personal and ethical conflicts that impact decision making. In this groundbreaking book, the authors explore how those who serve as leaders on projects can exercise their roles in ways that respond to the ever-increasing need for ethical decision making. They examine the factors that enable and constrain responsible leadership, looking at the issues faced by project managers as they interact with team members and other stakeholders. Responsible Leadership also provides new insights into how project managers view the moral implications of conflicts that occur as they conduct their work and is a valuable addition to the project management toolkit.

These chapters on ‘Responsible Leadership’ represent the latest thinking on a topic of increasing relevance in a connected world. There are many challenges that still remain when it comes to establishing responsible leadership both in theory and practice. Whilst offering conceptualisations for the improvement of leadership is a first and perhaps easier response, what is more difficult is to facilitate the actual change to happen. These chapters will not only generate interest in the emerging domain of studies on responsible leadership, but also will pave the way for future research in this area in the years to come. Responsibility as a leader is the ability to respond quickly to a complex and changing business environment. It means using values to make decisions that not only affect brand trust and corporate reputation, but impact upon employees and the wider community. In today's increasingly interconnected world, it is more important than ever that managers can achieve goals and desired results while still maintaining a degree of authenticity, ethics and stewardship. The Responsible Leader identifies what it means to be an authentic leader, taking in intra-organizational relationships, role modelling and ethical practice. Addressing the practical challenge of implementing a framework of corporate social responsibility in an organization that may embrace thousands of people, The Responsible Leader sets out what this strategy looks like in practice and advises on creating a new and hopeful narrative for the future. Drawing on in-depth case studies from HSBC, PwC, Oasis and Marks and Spencers that chart the journey to responsible and sustainable management in challenging environments, it presents a fresh vision for leadership success that goes beyond simple compliance.

The narrative about the project management profession is dominated by discussions of “success” and “failure” along with the need to improve the competence of project managers. As a result, the community is engaged in a fruitless search for a combination of tools, techniques and practices that will result in desired outcomes for funders. While the profession has made recent attempts to incorporate environmental and social responsibility, these areas are still framed within the existing discourses of project delivery. The De Gruyter Handbook of Responsible Project Management seeks to rethink project management by integrating contributions from the emerging responsible Management domain. This handbook will explore the nature and extent of project professionals’ responsibility at different levels – individual, team, organizational and societal – along with the implications for education, research and practice. The De Gruyter Handbook of Responsible Project Management offers cutting-edge insights into the fi eld of project management. It is an essential reference for scholars and practitioners.

This book seeks to answer the question of ‘leadership for what?’. We shall outline an answer by focusing on responsible leadership of purpose through an inter-disciplinary perspective. Responsible leadership moves the axis of leadership from leader-followers to leader-stakeholders; away from looking at leadership as person-centric – the qualities, abilities, and effectiveness of the leader, to a focus on the purposes, responsibilities and activities of leadership. Leadership orientation is about realising value for a range of constituencies, not just the shareholders of the business. In this way this book offers up an alternative business model to that of dominant neo-liberal approaches to capitalism and its flow-on effect to the leadership project. This is a model that draws on a most obvious assumption – if leaders maximise the use of all the capitals of their business they will maximise their dividends, and thus deliver their responsibility to the shareholders as well as other relevant stakeholders. This book explores how five dividends (based on five capitals) can be developed through attention to a sixth dividend (and sixth capital) – the dividend from our planet and communities. The planetary dividend is the flourishing of humanity – but it is also a significant dividend to the business. For example, by engaging the business in a purpose-led orientation to enhance the planetary dividend, the dividend from human resourcefulness becomes manifest – employee sense of purpose, commitment, passion and energy. The realisation of such can also connect with dividends from innovation, operations and brands. For example, the business benefits from a purpose-driven brand. In short, responsible leadership of purpose outlines a case for leadership to focus on a connected portfolio of ‘good’ dividends as an answer to the question ‘leadership for what?’ The book is written by academics and organisational leaders. It draws on a range of research with leaders from a variety of contexts to illustrate the challenges but also the benefits of this argument. It is an ambitious book: ambitious, in terms of moving leadership towards realising purpose; ambitious by seeking to align a range of business disciplines around responsible leadership; and ambitious because it challenges the dominant assumptions that shape business leadership. However, it is based on a simple question: why would a business not wish to generate good dividends for all its stakeholders?

Project Leadership, the classic, best-selling textbook, originally by Wendy Briner, Michael Geddes and Colin Hastings, anticipated so many of the changes in approaches to project management that are now regarded as mainstream; not least the whole behavioural management focus. The third edition by Sarah Coleman and Donnie MacNicol, has been substantially rewritten, introducing new material and experience reflecting the transformation that has taken place in the world of projects, teams and leadership. Project Leadership, Third Edition, looks at the nature the leadership role in projects and how this is significant and impacts the processes throughout a project life, from shaping and scoping, start up, delivery to project closure. The authors put considerable emphasis on a set of core human skills around the themes of vision and strategy, relationship building, communication and engagement. There are also chapters to help you to build personal and organizational leadership capability.
