Questo volume, il secondo della collana che documenterà le attività del PRIN 2006 "Restituiamo la Storia", contiene apparentemente "solo" il resoconto di due giornate di studio dedicate al lavoro di ricerca in progress: l'una sui primi risultati presentati nell'ambito del Seminario di studi storico-cartografici "Dalla mappa al GIS" (2008)1; l'altra, sui risultati del primo anno di lavoro in un Meeting organizzato dal DIPTU (2008)2, di cui il volume raccoglie le sintesi degli interventi e una serie di contributi presentati in quella sede. Eppure è interessante per più di un motivo: perché riflette, sotto il profilo metodologico del fare ricerca, il ruolo sempre più importante affidato all'attività di dissemination (basti vedere i recenti format dei progetti europei) non solo dei risultati finali, ma come elemento attivo della costruzione di una ricerca; perché, in questa ricerca, l'attività di dissemination in progress è uno strumento operativo specifico e pertinente per perseguire uno degli obiettivi fondamentali della ricerca stessa: la costruzione di una rete con gli studiosi dei Paesi ex coloniali e con le istituzioni che costituiscono i diversi fondi archivistici; perché consente di avere un primo scorcio del lavoro svolto dalle varie unità ma anche delle specificità proprie di ognuna di esse negli obiettivi, negli approcci, nel lavoro di interpretazione critica delle questioni disciplinari, dettati probabilmente dai singoli territori e dai caratteri della dominazione coloniale italiana oltreché dagli interessi di ricerca delle varie sedi universitarie.

According to one narrative, that received almost canonical status a century ago with Francis Haverfield, the orthogonal grid was the most important development of ancient town planning, embodying values of civilization in contrast to barbarism, diffused in particular by hundreds of Roman colonial foundations, and its main legacy to subsequent urban development was the model of the grid city, spread across the New World in new colonial cities. This book explores the shortcomings of that all too colonialist narrative and offers new perspectives. In 1912, Italy occupied Rhodes, an Ottoman town inhabited by Greek Orthodox, Muslims, Jews, and Catholics. Rhodes became a territory of Italy’s empire in 1923 following the Treaty of Lausanne, only one year after Mussolini seized power in Rome. The Ottoman demise corresponded to the expansion of fascist imperialism in the Mediterranean. Both the Ottoman Young Turks and Italian colonial governors invoked the role of a "new generation" of youth in imperial rule. Generations of Empire investigates the relationship between state and society in light of successive transformations of imperial rule, rethinking Italian colonialism as post-Ottoman history. Andreas Guidi explores how communal life in the town of Rhodes was affected by the transition between these regimes, from an autocratic to a constitutional empire in late Ottoman years to Italian military occupation to fascist annexation. Based on archival sources in five languages from seven different countries, the book investigates generational dynamics in the domains of political activism, the family, education, work and leisure, and mobility.
