“This global affairs veteran has carved out a solid, mature path, including for ‘flawed democracies’ like the U.S. We’d all be wise to follow.” — Vancouver Sun From the author of the Globe and Mail bestseller, Claws of the Panda, comes a book quite literally for our times. Restoring Democracy in an Age of Populists and Pestilence is a thoughtful account of how we can save democracies from the despots and populists who provide easy answers to complicated situations, dumbing political discourse down to sandbox antics. Manthorpe argues that democracy is more resilient than it appears, and is capable of overcoming the attacks from within and without that have sapped its vigour since the end of the Cold War. He begins with a description of the events of 1989, one of the seminal years in modern history. This saw the end of the Cold War, and the apparent conclusive victory of democracy and its civic values. But the view of these changes as a triumph of democracy — as summed up in Francis Fukuyama’s essay "The End of History" — was short-lived. Russia, shorn of its Soviet empire, and the Chinese Communist Party, re-examining its survival after the Tiananmen Square Massacre, began devising ways to counter-attack the West’s triumphalism and these met with considerable success. Internal pressures and contradictions — wealth disparity being chief among them — threaten the survival of many democratic systems. Abandoned industrial workers turn to the repeated platitudes designed to appeal to those left behind without actually offering them the ways and means to catch up. Immigrants, refugees, and the reformist fixations of isolated liberal elites have provided ammunition for would-be despots. Adding to the pressures building on the political norms of our democracies, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought economic and social stand-still for which no country is prepared.

DEMOCRACY IS FAILING The driving force behind most government has become the attainment and retention of office. Thus dependency on vested interests to keep them there means politicians have forgotten who really they serve. WHO WILL REMIND THEM? THE GAP IS WIDENING The gap between 'rich' and 'poor' is widening. This proves democracy is failing. All because our 'progressive' and overly complex taxation system encourages behaviour that plunders the economy and actively undermines its long-term viability. WHO WILL STOP THE PLUNDER? POLICY IS PERVERTED Government policy-making is limited, irrational and rarely for the benefit of the people government is supposed to serve. Lobbying, party politics, grasping for office, ideological rigidity and opinion polls have all perverted government's role and its power. WHO WILL CORRECT THIS? SOMEBODY SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! In this ground-breaking book, Bay Jordan has decided to be that "somebody" and encourages you to be that "somebody" too. The Democracy Delusion sets out four simple ideas to restore true democracy and undo the harm done by conventional wisdom. Bay invites you to take ownership of these ideas, help them spread and make a positive difference. The Democracy Delusion is a passionate manifesto for peaceful, practical and powerful social change. RESTORING DEMOCRACY BEGINS WITH YOU! This fully revised second edition includes additional information on the threat of TTIP and a foreword by Lawrence Bloom.

Governor Howard Dean of Vermont argues that you have the power to change the future course of America. If you are worried about the way America is being governed and want to reclaim the country you know and love, now is the time to take it back. You Have the Power is an energetic and detailed guide to restoring American democracy. It exposes the radical extremism of today's "mainstream" Republicans and shows Democrats how to be Democrats again. By reigniting hope, by tapping into the energy and ideals of the American people, Dean writes, the Democrats can restore America's strength and standing at home and abroad. Drawing on his experience in the 2004 presidential election and the hope and inspiration of the people he met on the campaign trail, Dean shows how real people -- ordinary Americans like himself -- can come together to take their party, the political process, and their country back.

Trumpocalypse written by David Frum and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-26 with Political Science categories.

"I don't take responsibility at all." Those words of Donald Trump at a March 13, 2020, press conference are likely to be history's epitaph on his presidency. A huge swath of Americans has put their faith in Trump, and Trump only, because they see the rest of the country building a future that doesn’t have a place for them. If they would risk their lives for Trump in a pandemic, they will certainly risk the stability of American democracy. They brought the Trumpocalypse upon the country, and a post-Trumpocalypse country will have to find a way either to reconcile them to democracy - or to protect democracy from them. In Trumpocalypse, David Frum looks at what happens when a third of the electorate refuses to abandon Donald Trump, no matter what he does. Those voters aren’t looking for policy wins. They’re seeking cultural revenge. It is not enough to defeat Donald Trump on election day 2020. Even if Trump peacefully departs office, the trauma he inflicted will distort American and world politics for years to come. Americans must start from where they are, build from what they have, to repair the damage Trump inflicted on the country, to amend the wrongs that, under Trump, they inflicted upon each other. Americans can do better. David Frum shows how—and inspires all readers of all points of view to believe again in the possibilities of American life. Trumpocalypse is both a warning of danger and a guide to reform that will be read and discussed for years to come.
