Excerpt from Resumen Histórico-Crítico de la Literatura Española Según los Estudios y Descubrimientos Más Recientes Sabios de todas las naciones dedicados, desde antes de mediar el siglo XIX, al estudio profundo de las literaturas europeas, han renovado por completo la faz de la nuestra. Una investigación me tódica y perseverante, auxiliada por todos los conocimientos ade cuados para su eficacia y sirviendo á un espiritu Critico cada vez más libre de preocupaciones de escuela y más enemigo de las tesis aprie risticas, ha puesto á la luz del dia obras y sujetos perdidos en las ti nieblas de lo pasado, sometido á examen severo lo que se tenia por cierto o incontrovertible, y lo que vale más que todo esto, fijado de un modo definido el concepto de lo nacional en Literatura que no puede ser más relativo, y distinto, por lo limitado, de lo que antes era creído en este orden. Ha podido decir Brunetiere que no hay Literatura francesa, ni española, ni alemana, italiana 6 inglesa, sino sencillamente europea; y aunque rechacemos como exagerada esta afirmación, ya que la indole de cada pueblo imprime su sello característico, si no en todas, en muchas ó algunas de las mani testaciones de su ingenio, ella indica la tendencia de los estudios modernos, y justifica la necesidad creciente de la Literatura com parada, porque es imposible conocer, ni aun elementalmente, la particular de ninguna nación sin tener, ante todo, una idea clara de sus relaciones con las otras. Está renovación, puede decirse total, de la Literatura española, hace inútiles, por anticuados, los libros y manuales que ahora cir culan, ya para la enseñanza en las Universidades e' Institutos, ya para conocimiento del público culto, pero no especialista en la ma teria. Quien quiera hay saber Literatura española tiene que acudir á la inmensa obra de Menéndez Pelayo, esparcida en tantos volumenes, y aun esto no es bastante, pues el maestro ha dejado ma cho que decir á sus insignes discípulos Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Francisco Rodriguez Marin, Adolfo Bonilla, Blanca de los Rios, et cólera, y mucho dijo también su maestro Milá y Fontanals, y han dicho y dicen los extranjeros hispanófilos literarios, y los que, sin serlo, consideran nuestra riqueza literaria como parte integrante del acerbo común humano, y más todavía del especial de las nacio nes latinas, ó Romania, según el término más en uso. Pero ¿cómo una persona culta y deseosa de estar al tanto de los adelantos de su época, mas no consagrada profesionalmente estos estudios, ha de poder dedicarse á tan extensa y - variada lectura?
