This play examines the death and resurrection of Jesus from the perspective of the frightened, disappointed, doubting and fearful Disciples who had deserted Jesus during the trial and execution, and also from the perspective of the Scribe and Pharisee, who are trying to come to grips with their decision to have Jesus killed. There is one particular Scripture that I especially wanted to highlight that I have never heard anyone talk about, and I have not seen it in any of the movies that were produced about this historical event. The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After Jesus' resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people. (Matthew 27:52-53). The play ends with a now resurrected Jesus reminding His disciples about the importance of partaking in the communion.

Why do so many people think that no one can know the exact time of Christ's second coming? In Matthew 16:3, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and the Sadducees, because they could not discern the signs of the times. Jesus then tells them the only sign they will receive is the sign of the prophet Jonah. This is very interesting. In Chapter Nine of the book of Daniel, the angel Gabriel gives Daniel the prophecy of the seventy weeks. He tells Daniel that when the decree goes out to rebuild Jerusalem, which happened in 455 B.C., sixty nine weeks (or 483 years) later the Messiah will be cut off and killed. Subtract 455 from 483 and you arrive at the year 28 A.D. It is the year 28 A.D. when Jesus is talking with the Pharisees and the Sadducess as recorded in Matthew 16:3. The learned leaders of the Hebrew people know all too well the significance of Jesus' presence at this time in history. This is why Jesus does not give the leaders a sign pertaining to his coming, they already know he is here. Instead, Jesus points to Jonah as the sign for his resurrection.

The year begins with the season of Advent, when we think of the first coming of Jesus into the world and the way in which it was prepared for his coming. Then follows Christmas, the well-known and popular festival when we remember the Saviour’s birth to a Jewish lady, Mary. This is followed by the Epiphany, when the Lord was first shown to the non-Jewish people, the Gentiles. Quite a significant event for those not of the Jewish faith. It is the first recorded time that the Lord was shown to non-Jewish people (Gentiles), reminding us that he came for everyone. Things move on rapidly to Lent, and the Lord’s life, which leads up to his Crucifixion. Appropriately, the solemnity of Lent and Holy Week is followed by the joyful season of Easter, when we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. Forty days on, and we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord. It is not long after the Ascension that the church celebrates Pentecost (or Whitsun), when the Holy Spirit of God descended on the church and kick-started it into action—action that continues to this day! As you may know, the rest of the year, up until Advent, is taken up by the season of Trinity, with much teaching and many commemorations. I hope that you enjoy this tour through the Christian year and that it deepens and makes more relevant your practice of faith in Christ Crucified, Risen, and Ascended.
