A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant and enthralling.” —The Wall Street Journal A paradigm-shifting book from an acclaimed Harvard Medical School scientist and one of Time’s most influential people. It’s a seemingly undeniable truth that aging is inevitable. But what if everything we’ve been taught to believe about aging is wrong? What if we could choose our lifespan? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. David Sinclair, leading world authority on genetics and longevity, reveals a bold new theory for why we age. As he writes: “Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable.” This eye-opening and provocative work takes us to the frontlines of research that is pushing the boundaries on our perceived scientific limitations, revealing incredible breakthroughs—many from Dr. David Sinclair’s own lab at Harvard—that demonstrate how we can slow down, or even reverse, aging. The key is activating newly discovered vitality genes, the descendants of an ancient genetic survival circuit that is both the cause of aging and the key to reversing it. Recent experiments in genetic reprogramming suggest that in the near future we may not just be able to feel younger, but actually become younger. Through a page-turning narrative, Dr. Sinclair invites you into the process of scientific discovery and reveals the emerging technologies and simple lifestyle changes—such as intermittent fasting, cold exposure, exercising with the right intensity, and eating less meat—that have been shown to help us live younger and healthier for longer. At once a roadmap for taking charge of our own health destiny and a bold new vision for the future of humankind, Lifespan will forever change the way we think about why we age and what we can do about it.

The Future Of Precision Medicine In Australia written by Robert C. Williamson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-31 with Biotechnology categories.

The Future of Precision Medicine in Australia explores the current trends in precision medicine technologies and the role that broader implementation of precision medicine capabilities may play in the Australian context.Recent technological advances allow the determination of a wide range of data about an individual's genetic and biochemical make-up, as formed by their genes, environment and lifestyle. These advances can and do affect the clinical management of a person's health and disease. The ability to analyse disease in terms of an individual's make-up, when compared with and studied alongside aggregated clinical and laboratory data from healthy and diseased populations, is termed 'precision' or 'personalised' medicine. Although medicine has always had personal and predictive aspects, precision medicine allows health and disease to be viewed at an increasingly fine-grained resolution, attuned to the complexities of both the biology of each individual and variation within the population.

As chemical exposures and cancer rates increase worldwide, there is a need for students, researchers, public health professionals, and physicians to understand the mechanisms connecting exposure with human cancer risk. This new book is an essential reference, as well as introduction to the field of chemical carcinogenesis, with particular focus on DNA damage as a critical link between exposure and disease, and emphasis on biomarkers associated with cancer risk in humans. In addition to DNA damage, related topics covered include metabolism of selected chemical carcinogens, exposure-induced epigenetic changes, cancer-associated mutations and reduction of DNA damage and cancer risk by chemoprevention. The book is designed to be a comprehensive guide to basic principles, a teaching tool for academics, and a map for the development of protective mechanisms to reduce human cancer risk.

Matrix Metalloproteinases In Health And Disease written by Raffaele Serra and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-11 with categories.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are members of an enzyme family and are critical for maintaining tissue allostasis. MMPs can catalyze normal turnover of the extracellular matrix (ECM) together with other metalloproteinases such as ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase) and ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif) families. MMP activity is also regulated by a group of endogenous proteins called tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). All these proteins have a pivotal role involving ECM remodelling in normal physiological processes such as wound healing, embryogenesis, angiogenesis, bone remodelling, immunity, and the female reproductive cycle. An imbalance in the expression or activity of MMPs can also have important consequences in diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, chronic leg ulcers, and multiple sclerosis. In recent years, MMPs have been found to play an important role in the field of precision medicine, as they may serve as biomarkers that may predict an individual's disease predisposition, state, or progression. MMPs are also thought to be a sensible target for molecular therapy. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore the most recent findings in this field that may have an impact in healthcare systems.

A wide variety of plant-derived compounds, including polyphenols, are present in the human diet and may protect against vascular diseases, cancers, viral infections, neurodegenerative processes and associated anti-inflammatory effects. Among these bioactive compounds, several A wide variety of plant-derived compounds, including polyphenols, are present in the human studies revealed that resveratrol, a trans-3,4,5-trihydroxystilbene, found in various natural products may be one of the main wine micro-components responsible for health benefits. Indeed, this polyphenol possesses a myriad of beneficial effects and can act at multiple levels, such as cellular signalling, enzymatic pathways and gene expression. Many laboratories have studied the molecular and cellular mechanisms of resveratrol in various models to get insight into its mechanisms of action in various disease processes. The increase of resveratrol interest is both reflected by the number of publications in databases, approximately 4,520 in Medline, and by the large number of patents copyrighted by biotechnology companies with new applications in cosmetic fields, central nervous system, food complement, preparations, to better understand the origins of resveratrol, its cellular and molecular mechanisms in plants and humans, this book on resveratrol has been divided into sections ranging from natural and industrial production to the latest scientific advances and clinical trials through the participation of leading scientists in each area covered in this book. Section 1 describes the sources and new engineering processes for custom and commercial bioreactors production of resveratrol. Section 2 is devoted to the common and new methods of resveratrol analysis. The following sections concern the health benefits of resveratrol. Section 3 shows the anti-oxidant properties of resveratrol in various physiopathological states. Section 4 focuses on the cardioprotective effects of resveratrol and the improvement of the endothelial function.Section 5 deals with metabolic disorders and the potential use of resveratrol in the prevention and treatment of obesity and osteoporosis. Section 6 is dedicated to health benefits of resveratrol against inflammation and associated diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The role of new targets such as microRNAs in the biological response of resveratrol is also discussed. Section 7 describes the anticancer properties of resveratrol through the chemoprevention of various cancers, the modulation of cell cycle, the induction of apoptosis and DNA damages. Section 8 reviews the potential use of resveratrol in neuroprotection such as neurovascular system and neuroglial plasticity, and in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases. Besides the prevention of a number of diseases, other aspects such as dietary intake and bioavailability are important for the comprehension of resveratrol mechanisms of action. In this area, section 9 provides an overview of the metabolism of resveratrol, its pharmacokinetics and the recent advances in resveratrol delivery. The last part of this book, section 10, is dedicated to the clinical development of resveratrol and to the future development of resveratrol derivatives to provide new pharmacological tools for treatment of various diseases. We hope that this book may provide a valuable tool for graduate and PhD students in sciences, biology, medicine and pharmacology and for scientist or clinicians working in this field or all the people using this polyphenol.
