In Return to Babel, each of ten historically significant biblical texts is interpreted by three scholars: one Latin American, one African, and one Asian. Geographic locales range from a tiny village in the Philippines to the city of Nairobi, Kenya; from Gwangju, South Korea, with its one million inhabitants, to the frontier city of Wiwili in the northern mountains of Nicaragua. The result is a collection of essays that shed new light on familiar texts and make the reader aware of the ways in which culture can shape our understanding of Scripture.

When we look at world conditions today we see problems that we could not have imagined thirty years ago. We ask ourselves: Will man ever be able to get along at all? Sadly, the answer is "no." From the beginning of creation, man has been in some form of combat, war or strife. When we ask why, no one has an answer. The only place to find the correct answer is in the Bible. The Bible says that God scattered the one race into many at the tower of Babel because He did not like what He saw: that with man nothing would be impossible. That is the reason God did not want one race, one speech, one tongue. That is what has kept man separated in the past. Now Satan wants to put all the races together for world domination and control. We are in the midst of that process now. That is the sum total of all prophecy. S.P. Gray has studied prophecy for 35 years and that is his gift. He likes to keep up on what's being fulfilled in the word of God. His hope is that he can be used to spark an interest in prophecy, and that the body of Christ takes prophecy the way God meant it to be. He is currently teaching a class on prophecy and has taught basic Christianity for four years.

The Last Lingua Franca written by Nicholas Ostler and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-04 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In this provocative and persuasive new book, Nicholas Ostler challenges our assumption that English will continue to dominate as the global lingua franca. Drawing on his encyclopaedic knowledge of world languages and their history, Ostler reveals that just as past great languages like Latin and Sanskrit have died out, so English will follow. The influence of English now is hard to exaggerate - it is the world's preferred medium for business, science and entertainment, and is claimed to be a basic educational tool like mathematics or computing. So is it here to stay? For the last four centuries, the dominant world power has been English-speaking, but the global balance of power is shifting. And in countries like Brazil, Russia and China, English plays no part in the national tradition. Although globalization has helped the rise of English, trade, migration, economic development and technological innovation are now changing the way we access and use language. Ostler shows how we are headed towards a much more multilingual and diverse future. And as English retreats, no single language will take its place. We can embrace this future but first we need to accept it: the last competitive advantage of native English-speakers will soon be consigned to history.

Babel S Tower Translated written by Phillip Michael Sherman and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-15 with Religion categories.

In Babel's Tower Translated, Phillip Sherman explores the narrative of Genesis 11 and its reception and interpretation in several Second Temple and Early Rabbinic texts (e.g., Jubilees, Philo, Genesis Rabbah). The account of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) is famously ambiguous. The meaning of the narrative and the actions of both the human characters and the Israelite deity defy any easy explanation. This work explores how changing historical and hermeneutical realities altered and shifted the meaning of the text in Jewish antiquity.

Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XV NEW DEPARTURES There were signs of a flitting in Hilda's quarters. Pictures were taken down, burnished copper pots gleamed from the packing-boxes, and the tenement house was again in clear evidence. Suddenly struck with dreariness, Hilda turned her back on the confusion and ran downstairs, to join the group of friends gathered for a last chat around the steaming samovar. The settlement, which had seemed so daring a finality two years ago, had long since become to her thought only a halfway house. Her loyalty was deep toward this friendly shelter that awaited the social pilgrim in his bleak journey across civilizar tion. She knew how many were encouraged to undertake that journey through the knowledge that the amenities of life need not be left behind by the traveller in the city wilderness; to be hostess in such a hostelry seemed to her one of the posts of clearest value in this bewildered world. Nor did she ignore the significance of the settlement as a meetingground for the forces of reform. But for herself, -- she was wayfarer ever and the time of her sojourning was ended. Father Phillips had spoken truly, however, when he told her that return to her past was impossible. Her mother, after over twenty years of widowhood, had surprised her circle of friends by marrying that kindly, wealthy, and Philistine gentleman, her cousin, Mr. Howard Brown. Delicately pathetic as ever in aspect, she still bore herself with the air of one who mingled with the world by compulsion; and the world in consequence adored her. Toward her direct and forceful daughter, Mrs. Howard Brown carried herself in a manner half tender, half reproachful; the affection between them was unbroken; but her marriage snapped the last tie of duty that bound Hilda...

Babel No More written by Michael Erard and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-10 with History categories.

A “fascinating” (The Economist) dive into the world of linguistics that is “part travelogue, part science lesson, part intellectual investigation…an entertaining, informative survey of some of the most fascinating polyglots of our time” (The New York Times Book Review). In Babel No More, Michael Erard, “a monolingual with benefits,” sets out on a quest to meet language superlearners and make sense of their mental powers. On the way he uncovers the secrets of historical figures like the nineteenth-century Italian cardinal Joseph Mezzofanti, who was said to speak seventy-two languages, as well as those of living language-superlearners such as Alexander Arguelles, a modern-day polyglot who knows dozens of languages and shows Erard the tricks of the trade to give him a dark glimpse into the life of obsessive language acquisition. With his ambitious examination of what language is, where it lives in the brain, and the cultural implications of polyglots’ pursuits, Erard explores the upper limits of our ability to learn and use languages and illuminates the intellectual potential in everyone. How do some people escape the curse of Babel—and what might the gods have demanded of them in return?
