This guide to the South Dakota region that houses the world’s richest fossil beds does “an excellent job of presenting the current state of knowledge” (Choice). The forbidding Big Badlands in Western South Dakota contain the richest fossil beds in the world. Even today these rocks continue to yield new specimens brought to light by snowmelt and rain washing away soft rock deposited on a floodplain long ago. The quality and quantity of the fossils are superb: most of the species to be found there are known from hundreds of specimens. The fossils in the White River Group (and similar deposits in the American west) preserve the entire late Eocene through the middle Oligocene, roughly 35-30 million years ago and more than thirty million years after non-avian dinosaurs became extinct. The fossils provide a detailed record of a period of abrupt global cooling and what happened to creatures who lived through it. This book is a comprehensive reference to the sediments and fossils of the Big Badlands, and also touches on National Park Service management policies that help protect such significant fossils. Includes photos and illustrations “A worthy successor to the work of O’Harra.” —Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology

One man stands for justice and the law, the other stands for murder and mayhem. Both are about to reach a point of no return …. The ranger makes his living tracking down dangerous criminals who have long eluded the law. His goal is swift justice and his aim is certain death. But a midnight jailbreak that sets loose a cadre of killers and trigger-happy outlaws is about to put the ranger’s skills and sense of justice to a test. Ernesto Caslado, the Mexican-born desperado who is behind the jailbreak, leads the band of convicts deep into the harsh Badlands Frontier. He, too, is searching for justice—seeking out the true killer guilty of the murder that was about to send him to the gallows. Both lawman and killer are driven, and both are about to face off in a life or death challenge. This volume has something for everyone who hunts, be they rabbit hunters in the deep South, Cape buffalo hunters in the African bush, or white-tailed deer hunters in the woods of North America. Its selections celebrate hunting for big game, small game, waterfowl, upland birds, turkeys, African and Asian game, and much more. Readers will find many of their favorite writers represented here, along with authors who have penned inspired pieces that few have read, until now. The book has been put together in keeping with the spirit and philosophy of Theodore Roosevelt, our twenty-sixth president, who not only believed in the preservation of our wildlife and natural resources, but in the importance of hunting to the fabric of American life. Part of the proceeds from this book will go to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, a coalition of organizations and individual grassroots partners working together to preserve the traditions of hunting and fishing.
