After Barack Obama's solid win in the 2012 election, it's easy to forget that there was a time, not long ago, when the Democrats were shut out of power for over a decade. But Al From remembers. In 1984, he led a small band of governors, US senators, and members of Congress to organize the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). Their mission: to rescue the party from the political wilderness, redefine its message, and, most importantly, win presidential elections. In April 1989, From traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, to recruit the state's young governor, Bill Clinton, to be chairman of the DLC. Here, Al From explores the founding philosophy of the New Democrats, which not only achieved stunning validation during Clinton's two terms, but also became the model for resurgent center-left parties in Europe and throughout the democratic world. In The New Democrats and the Return to Power, he outlines for the first time the principles at the heart of the movement, including economic centrism, national security, and entitlement reform, and why they are vital to the success of the Democratic Party in the years ahead.

On 10 July 2020, Singapore held its 18th general elections in history and the 13th since independence in 1965. The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) once again retained its supermajority by capturing 83 out of the 93 seats, controlling 89.2 percent of parliamentary seats. In spite of a changing social, political and economic landscape, Singapore is still very much identified as an illiberal democracy that has somehow thrived over the years. As the general elections was held during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were expectations that Singaporeans would overwhelmingly vote for the PAP government as the country was facing a serious crisis of a generation. The 'flight-to-safety' mode that some had expected in an election during a crisis, however, did not materialise. In the end, Singaporean voters decided to send a strong warning to the PAP that not all was well, with the opposition achieving its strongest gains since 1965, capturing 10 seats and an additional two Non-constituency Member of Parliament seats. The PAP's total votes dropped from 69.9 percent in 2015 to 61.2 percent in 2020. The rise of a credible opposition has also further strengthened Singaporeans' resolve to ensure that a fair-playing field exists in the political realm. With the highest voter turnout since independence, many have made it known that their voices mattered. The PAP also saw some cracks in its ranks, with some former cadre members and supporters being critical of the new fourth-generation team.Against this backdrop, this book hopes to address the following questions. What were the key issues in the general elections? Who were the main contenders in the polls? What accounted for the PAP's continued hold on power in Singapore? Why did the opposition perform much better than in the previous general elections? What are the main implications of the 2020 general elections results for the PAP, opposition and the broader society at large? How far have electoral issues shifted from 'bread and butter' concerns to much broader topics of social injustices and diversity of voices in parliament? What were some of the crucial talking points during this election? Last, but not least, how far did social media and internet campaigning determine the outcome of this election?

The Triumph of Politics offers a comparative and historical interpretation of Venezuela's Chavez, Bolivia's Morales and Ecuador's Correa - South America's most prominent ‘21st century socialists'. It argues that the claims of these 21st century socialists should be taken seriously even though not necessarily at face value. The authors show how the consensual market oriented policymaking that characterized almost all of South America in the 1990s has now given way to something quite different. Polarization and intense political conflict have returned to much of the region. Although the Left has not always been the beneficiary of this changed pattern, the ‘21st century' governments of Chavez, Morales and Correa have been agenda setters. The questions raised by their emergence, style of governance and policy orientations resonate across Latin America and beyond. It is likely that the kind of politics with which they have been associated will be influential in the region for quite some time to come.

At the dawn of a new millennium and the information age, the United States stands at the crossroads of enlightenment and despotism. The internet is the final frontier of freedom: but has it enslaved the American public in political ideology? Many in the mainstream media, as well as social media, seem content to perpetuate the animosity between Americans, profiting from the bitter rivalry between political parties that keep Americans divided. Few will discuss the true nature of the despotism in which we currently live, the path that led us to where we are now, or how we can change the path we are on."The Abolition of Political Parties: The Return to a Free and Open Political Dialogue" explores the historical and psychological roots of the American divide. It discusses the history of political parties, and how the spirit of rivalry and revenge associated with political parties has been the driving force behind the darkest days of our country. It also examines in further detail how political parties has utilized advances in the fields of psychology and sociology, as well as advances in the technologies that both inform and reflect public opinion, to manipulate public opinion and keep Americans divided.Lighting the path towards freedom from ideological slavery, it offers insight into how we the people can build a bridge across that which divides us - our passions for our political parties.Political parties wield more power than any other force over public opinion, elections, and all branches of government. Never addressed by the Constitution and warned against by the founding fathers, our two-party political system has dominated American culture throughout its history. This system established and now perpetuates a despotism through which American citizens are manipulated and disempowered, while corporations and private interests continue to exert increasingly more influence over foreign and domestic policy. As the republic becomes more susceptible to despotic influences both foreign and domestic, the public faith in political parties has become all but lost. Yet America persists in the ways of the two-party system, which divides us now more than ever. Political parties are unconstitutional and need to be abolished. They have laid waste to the intended balance of power in our federal government: the dominant political party now holds more power over all three branches of government than ever before. At the same time, Americans remain divided in their party passions, willingly propagandizing each other while failing to realize the dire nature of the situation: our democracy has devolved into a despotism. Only after political parties are abolished can we return to a free and open political dialogue in America.
