Revelations written by Elaine Pagels and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-06 with Religion categories.

A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

This is the Rev. Clarence Larkin's guide to the Book of Revelation. Larkin, who published several books about biblical studies in the 1910s and 20s, was a 'Dispensationalist, ' one of the threads of modern Evangelical Christianity. The predecessor of Larkin is J.N. Darby, the founder of Dispensationalism, and among his many successors are Hal Lindsay, and the Left Behind books. Unlike more recent authors, however, Larkin does not make any claims to know when or exactly how the prophecies will unfold. Rather he takes us on a grand tour of the Apocalypse of St. John, and guides us through its images, symbols and poetry. Larkin sorts out what could be a reference to an actual event or person, (without attempting any particular association) and what is pure symbolism. Larkin uses bold type extensively for emphasis, as well as some superb 'visual aids' in the form of intricate charts and maps. Contrasted with other prophetic books such as Nostradamus and the Sibylline Oracles, Revelation has a consistent narrative with a beginning, middle and end. It is also one of the essential sacred texts and required reading for anyone interested in religion. This book will be a welcome reference for anyone studying or trying to explain Revelation, whether or not they are Dispensationalists

Revelation is about the resurrected Christ, His church, and the world. More than any other prophetic book of the Bible, the prophecies of Revelation are presented in symbolic form; that is, pictures, rather than words, are used to convey the message. This is why this book is somewhat difficult to understand--the pictures have to be interpreted. These amazing, symbolic pictures, like the Parables, both reveal and conceal. Thus the book of the Revelation is not so clear that everyone can see the meaning and understand it immediately. But, as will be discovered, the pictures have an ascertainable meaning, a meaning which is based on the previous books of the Bible. It should be mentioned at the outset that some pictures have more than one meaning--that is, they are composite. Where this is so, all the meanings are valid and must be held together. Another remarkable fact must be stated: Unlike any other book of the Bible, Revelation, in an amazing way, sums up all that has gone before, in both Old and New Testaments. In other words, it sums up all the other books of the Bible! Revelation is, in truth, the final book of the Bible, and so every thread which runs through the Scriptures is not only picked up but tied into a final knot in this amazing book.

In 1987, when Ed joined a new church, the pastor was teaching on the book of Revelation. Ed so enjoyed the teaching that he decided to read what others had to say about Revelation. He quickly learned that there were many different interpretations of Revelation and other books of the Bible that contained prophecy about the end times or latter days. He decided that he needed to do more reading and study of scripture, as well as books written by others, so he could come to his own understanding of what God was telling us about how He would bring things to an end. After much reading and prayer, his focus narrowed primarily to the books of Daniel and Revelation. The book of Daniel is about Israel in the time before Christ. The prophecy in Daniel begins with the Babylonian kingdom and continues through the Roman kingdom in such detail and accuracy that many believe it was written much later and is more historical than prophetic. It also tells us about the later kingdoms but in a much broader sense and less detail. The book of Revelation, written by John on the island of Patmos, tells us about the kingdoms that come after the Roman kingdom. Revelation tells us in great detail about Christ's message to the seven churches and the seventieth week of Daniel's prophecy of seventy weeks of years. This includes the breaking of the seven seals, the blowing of the seven trumpets, and the pouring out of the seven bowl judgments. Lastly it tells us the good news about the return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom.
