In the first of seven chapters of this comprehensive review of research in social studies, William B. Stanley presents an overview of current issues and approaches relevant to research in social education. The second chapter, by Catherine Cornbleth, is a review of critical thinking and cognitive process research. Special attention is given to "myths" that guide current research and practice. In the third chapter, Richard K. Jantz and Kenneth Klawitter review early childhood and elementary education research in social education. In Chapter 4, James S. Leming analyzes the research on a wide range of approaches to socio-moral or values education. In Chapter 5, Jane J. White discusses ethnographic research and the paradoxes and problems it raises for social education. Chapter 6, by William B. Stanley, is a discussion of recent research and development in the foundations of social education. The chapter focuses on the wide variety of rationales developed, critiqued, and refined by mainstream social educators since 1976. In the final chapter, Jack L. Nelson and James P. Shaver discuss the status of and limitations inherent in social education, each author taking a different position regarding the future of research in social education. Social studies research has been criticized for sampling bias, inappropriate methodologies, incorrect or inappropriate use of statistics, weak or ill-defined treatments, and lack of replication and/or longitudinal follow-up. In an effort to ascertain whether past criticisms were true of current research as well, a review was conducted of 118 studies published in "Theory and Research in Social Education" (TRSE), the "Journal of Social Studies Research" (JSSR), and the research section of "Social Education" (SE) for the years 1979-1986. This monograph, the first in a series designed to provide "cutting edge" information to the social studies profession, presents the results of this investigation. Chapter 1 critiques the 118 studies. Chapter 2 offers some observations, based on the analysis in chapter 1, about the nature of current social studies research. Chapter 3 discusses how the quality of social studies research might be improved. The remarks in this chapter are directed to three groups of social studies educators: (1) professors who direct master's theses or doctoral dissertations, but who do not teach courses in educational research, (2) graduate students who intend to do research, and (3) classroom teachers who have an interest in research. Chapter 4 contains an in-depth evaluation of a single study using the same criteria discussed in chapter 1. Chapter 5 presents some ideas about how classroom teachers of social studies might become more involved in research in their classrooms and schools. Chapter 6 lists the studies reviewed. Despite technology’s presence in virtually every public school, its documented familiarity and use by youth outside of school, and the wealth of resources it provides for teaching social studies, there has been relatively little empirical research on its effectiveness for the teaching and learning of social studies. In an effort to begin to fill this gap in research literature, this book focuses on research on technology in social studies education. The objectives of this volume are threefold: to describe research frameworks, provide examples of empirical research, and chart a course for future research endeavors. Accordingly, the volume is divided into three overarching sections: research constructs and contexts, research reports, and research reviews. The need for research is particularly acute within the field of social studies and technology. As the primary purpose of social studies is to prepare the young people of today to be the citizens of tomorrow, it is necessary to examine how technology tools impact, improve, and otherwise affect teaching and learning in social studies. Given these circumstances, we have prepared this collection of research conceptualizations, reports, and reviews to achieve three goals. 1. Put forward reports on how research is being conducted in the field 2. Present findings from well-designed research studies that provide evidence of how specific applications of technology are affecting teaching and learning in social studies. 3. Showcase reviews of research in social studies It is with this framework that we edited this volume, Research on Technology and Social Studies Education, as an effort to address emerging concerns related to theorizing about the field and reporting research in social studies and technology. The book is divided into four sections. The first section of the book includes three descriptions of research constructs and contexts in social studies and technology. The second section is focused on research reports from studies of student learning in social studies with technology. The third section contains research reports on teachers’ pedagogical considerations for using technology in social studies. In the fourth and final section, we present work that broadly reviews and critiques research in focused areas of social studies and technology. This volume contains twelve chapters, each of which focuses on social studies content and pedagogy and how the field is affected and enhanced with technology. The volume includes research and theoretical works on various topics, including digital history, digital video, geography, technology use in the K-12 social studies classroom, and artificial intelligence.
