On a global basis, the Uniform General Charter (Gencon Charter) is the most popular and widely used general-purpose voyage charter party. It is, at least by default, a port charter party, so the ship has the obligation of proceeding to the port of loading or discharging. When she arrives, laytime starts to run, and should it thereafter take too long to load or discharge cargo, her charterer may incur additional expense in the form of a charge by the shipowner for demurrage.
