The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Memory serves as a timely and unique resource for the current boom in thinking around translation and memory. The Handbook offers a comprehensive overview of a contemporary, and as yet unconsolidated, research landscape with a four-section structure which encompasses both current debate and future trajectories. Twenty-four chapters written by leading and emerging international scholars provide a cross-sectional snapshot of the diverse angles of approach and case studies that have thus far driven research into translation and memory. A valuable, far-reaching range of theoretical, empirical, reflective, comparative, and archival approaches are brought to bear on translational sites of memory and mnemonic sites of translation through the examination of topics such as traumatic, postcolonial, cultural, literary, and translator memory. This Handbook is key reading for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in translation studies, memory studies, and related areas.

This interdisciplinary volume attempts to gauge the individual and social issues related to memory, with an understanding of memory studies as an independent body of scholarship. It draws on multiple fields of knowledge, like popular culture, history, literature, oral cultures, and storytelling, which facilitates a panoramic view of memory studies. This book investigates the intersection between memory studies, partition, oral literature, and digital technology. It is also informed by the consciousness of memory in the digital age, which plays an integral role in what is remembered/forgotten, the form in which such memories are stored, and how they might be retrieved in future. This book will be an invaluable resource for those involved in research from undergraduate to post-doctoral level. This includes sociologists, psychologists, historians, artists, academicians, as well as research scholars from other disciplines.

Once treated as the absence of knowledge, ignorance today has become a highly influential topic in its own right, commanding growing attention across the natural and social sciences where a wide range of scholars have begun to explore the social life and political issues involved in the distribution and strategic use of not knowing. The field is growing fast and this handbook reflects this interdisciplinary field of study by drawing contributions from economics, sociology, history, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology, feminist studies, and related fields in order to serve as a seminal guide to the political, legal and social uses of ignorance in social and political life. This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the socially disputed period of the Cold War is remembered in today’s history classroom. Applying a diverse set of methodological strategies, the authors map the dividing lines in and between memory cultures across the globe, paying special attention to the impact the crisis-driven age of our present has on images of the past. Authors analysing educational media point to ambivalence, vagueness and contradictions in textbook narratives understood to be echoes of societal and academic controversies. Others focus on teachers and the history classroom, showing how unresolved political issues create tensions in history education. They render visible how teachers struggle to handle these challenges by pretending that what they do is ‘just history’. The contributions to this book unveil how teachers, backgrounding the political inherent in all memory practices, often nourish the illusion that the history in which they are engaged is all about addressing the past with a reflexive and disciplined approach.

This book analyzes the impact of abusive regimes of power on women’s lives and on their self-expression through close readings of life writing by women in communist Romania. In particular, it examines the forms of agency and privacy available to women under totalitarianism and the modes of relationships in which their lives were embedded. The self-expression and self-reflexive processes that are to be found in the body of Romanian women’s autobiographical writings this study presents create complex private narratives that underpin the creative development of inclusive memories of the past through shared responsibility and shared agency. At the same time, however, the way these private, personal narratives intertwined with collective and official historical narratives exemplifies the multidimensional nature of privacy as well as the radical redefinition of agency in this period. This book argues for a broader understanding of the narratives of the communist past, one that reflects the complexity of individual and social interactions and allows a deep exploration of the interconnected relations between memory, trauma, nostalgia, agency, and privacy.

Between The Memory And Post Memory Of Communism In Romania written by Monica Ciobanu and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-23 with History categories.

The first of its kind, this book traces the construction of post-memory in post-communist Romania. Focusing on the processes, gaps, agents, and contradictions of post-memory, it examines a range of topics across a variety of disciplines, addressing questions of museums and musealization, law and memory, political trials and retrospective justice, and post-memory in a digital context, while also considering marginalized and forgotten voices, such as those of the Roma population and abandoned children. Moving away from a focus on the institutional mechanisms of transitional justice or officially sanctioned historical narratives, Between the Memory and Post-Memory of Communism in Romania brings together some of the leading voices in the field of memory studies in Romania to adopt a more pluralistic and diverse approach to the communist past. It will therefore appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, museum studies, and history with interests in the communist period in Eastern Europe.
