Two periods of Brazilian film history are particularly notable for their artistic momentum: the Cinema Novo movement of the 1960s and early '70s, and the film revival from the mid 1990s onwards. What makes them especially strong, this book argues, is their utopian impulse. By adopting Utopia as a theme, as well as a method of film analysis, Lucia Nagib unveils, organises and interprets a fascinating wealth of recurrent images, which are a bridge between a cinema strongly concerned with the national project and another informed by global culture. Outstanding recent films, such as "Central Station", "Perfumed Ball", "Hans Staden", "Orfeu", "City of God" and "The Trespasser", are illuminated by Nagib's sharp analysis, which detects utopian, anti-utopian and even dystopian impulses in them. They are at once representatives of a political arena in constant struggle against underdevelopment and legitimate (as well as critical) heirs of past cinematic traditions. Throwing new light on a large selection of Cinema Novo and contemporary films, this book thus presents a national cinema that rejects the end of history and of film history, while benefiting from, and contributing to, a new transnational aesthetics.

Os quatro primeiros anos que se seguiram ao golpe militar de abril de 1964 foram marcados pelas tentativas de sua institucionalização através de ações políticas que geraram um gradativo endurecimento do regime. Reações a esse processo, que usavam a violência e o arbítrio como forma de intimidação da população, se organizaram em vários setores da sociedade brasileira. Uma das respostas ao regime de força foi a dos intelectuais que se reuniram, no Rio de Janeiro, em tomo de Ênio Silveira e sua Editora Civilização Brasileira. Era uma resistência cultural em que um dos principais veículos foi a Revista Civilização Brasileira. Foi nela também que o Cinema Novo Brasileiro encontrou espaço privilegiado para dialogar com as outras artes e as ciências sociais. O propósito deste trabalho é analisar e recuperar as idéias centrais do movimento do Cinema Novo expressas nos artigos publicados pela RCB. São 14 textos, entre artigos, entrevistas e conversas transcritas que nos permitem refletir sobre as contribuições estéticas e políticas do Cinema Novo, assim como revelar o seu projeto de desenvolvimento do cinema brasileiro. Finalmente, a revista registra a importante a contribuição do Instituto Columbianum, criado em Gênova, na Itália, em 1958, pelo padre jesuíta Angelo Arpa, na promoção, divulgação e discussão do Cinema Novo na Europa. O Columbianum funcionou como uma caixa de ressonância internacional para o cinema brasileiro. Resgata-se.
