The twelve essays in this collection promote scholarship on the rich and diverse subject of mysticism by examining the nature of its thought both from Eastern and Western and from philosophical and religious perspectives. These include studies of specific mystics, including Teresa de Avila, Lady Nijo, Hiroshi Motoyama, and Mirabai, and thinkers about mysticism, including Kant, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein. The book opens with two descriptive studies of similarities in the life of Teresa de Avila and mystics of very different times and cultures. The issue of mysticism and ethics is addressed in three essays, and central concepts involving pure conscious events and primordial oneness in Nietzsche are addressed in two separate essays. Wittgenstein's comments on mysticism are examined in two essays, one that places them in the perspective of his overall development and the other that studies them in comparison with recent continental thought. The book concludes with two essays that look broadly at the supersensible, one from an examination of Kantian aesthetics and the other from quantum mechanical interpretations of reality. Taken together, these essays attest to the power of mysticism to provoke reasoned thought about ultimate matters.

Investigations of mysticism often focus on the past while largely ignoring current developments. This book contributes to a reversal of that trend with a rigorous examination of a wide selection of contemporary Buddhist and Christian authors. The focus is on the intriguing intersections and subtle divergences now emerging in areas such as ineffability, nonconceptuality, paradox, inverted agency, unity, and self-dissolution. The analysis combines the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics with a range of methodological approaches, from discourse and thematic analysis to corpus linguistics. Wide-ranging, systematic, and informative, the book is invaluable to all of those interested in the phenomenon of mysticism within the modern world.

This book is dedicated to Jan Kerouac, the late daughter of Jack Kerouac who I knew well in the 60's in Yelapa, Mexico, with the hippies, 30 miles from any road. She lived in a thatched hut next to mine there. I remember seeing later, in the English, Mexico City News, "Jack Kerouac's Daughter, Jan Kerouac, has disappeared, whereabouts unknown." The first poem in the book is a poem I wrote to the spirit of Jan. Here is a small quote from that poem: "We know the significance of us being a piece of the big puzzle but we don't see all the pieces together melded as one demur picture...we seem so separate, but so cock-sure. "Things slip by," don't they Jan? My memory is flashing...this wheel is on fire!" The first chapter of her Memoirs, "Baby Driver," is like a recording tape of everything she had echoed to me in casual conversation. I think she thought things out in plots from the very beginning. Catholicism Revisited written by Robert Butterworth and has been published by Gracewing Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Religion categories.
'Catholicism Revisited' is an attempt to render Roman Catholicism more credible. The book rests on the author's conviction that a fuller and more correct understanding of Catholicism as a religion can emerge only from a radical reappraisal of the salvific role of Jesus' humanity, and of his human faith, hope and love, in line with the basic and central doctrines of the Incarnation and the Trinity. Being a Catholic means sharing in an ordinary but truly mystical way in the spirit of Jesus' human faith, hope and love, and to the maintenance of this insight and the faith-vision of reality it entails all else must yield precedence - the conventional notion of God, the necessary system of Catholic beliefs which support the faith-vision, and the Church itself. In the course of the book many fundamental issues are raised and discussed, not least the metaphorical nature of theology, the connection between faith and beliefs, the meaning and use of Catholic doctrines, the actual experience of being human. It is in the light of these issues that the author sees an urgent need to re-imagine the God of Catholicism. A born Catholic, Robert Butterworth was educated by the Jesuits and spent forty years in the Society of Jesus. He read classics at Oxford and completed his doctorate in early Christian theology at the Gregorian University in Rome. During more than twenty years as Head of Department he taught theology at Heythrop College in the University of London and at Roehampton University. On retirement from academia and from the Society he married and now lives near London. He has published autobiographical reflections on his experiences in 'The Detour' (Gracewing, 2005).

Orientalism Revisited written by Ian Netton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-12 with History categories.
The publication of Edward Said’s Orientalism in 1978 marks the inception of orientalism as a discourse. Since then, Orientalism has remained highly polemical and has become a widely employed epistemological tool. Three decades on, this volume sets out to survey, analyse and revisit the state of the Orientalist debate, both past and present. The leitmotiv of this book is its emphasis on an intimate connection between art, land and voyage. Orientalist art of all kinds frequently derives from a consideration of the land which is encountered on a voyage or pilgrimage, a relationship which, until now, has received little attention. Through adopting a thematic and prosopographical approach, and attempting to locate the fundamentals of the debate in the historical and cultural contexts in which they arose, this book brings together a diversity of opinions, analyses and arguments.

“In a period where no native scholars of equal repute existed, where no one possessed similar levels of extensiveness and depth in terms of understanding Malay culture and literature, it must be admitted that the Orientalist stand taken by scholars like Winstedt was unavoidable. As a matter of fact, even today one can still find Malay scholars echoing his and other European Orientalists’ opinions...” Ahmat Adam * The Sejarah Melayu has been known by many names, and its text has changed too. Interpolations, recensions and revisions over the centuries have resulted in dozens of variants, which brings up many questions. Was Tun Seri Lanang the author of the text? Can the manuscript be regarded as an authoritative historical source? How entrenched are Orientalist views in contemporary scholarship of the Sejarah Melayu? The answers, as well as digressions into mystic letters and Portuguese loan words, can be found in this new collection of essays.

This Handbook provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of the state of the field of the philosophy of meditation and engages primarily in the philosophical assessment of the merits of meditation practices. This Handbook unites novel and original scholarship from 28 leading Asian and Western philosophers, scientists, theologians, and other scholars on the philosophical assessment of meditation. Following the introduction by the editor, the Handbook’s chapters are organized in six parts: • Meditation and philosophy • Meditation and epistemology • Meditation and metaphysics • Meditation and values • Meditation and phenomenology • Meditation in Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian traditions A distinctive, timely, and invaluable reference work, it marks the emergence of a new discipline therein, the philosophy of meditation. In the past decades the “German-Jewish phenomenon” (Derrida) has increasingly attracted the attention of scholars from various fields: Jewish studies, intellectual history, philosophy, literary and cultural studies, critical theory. In all its complex dimensions, the post-enlightenment German-Jewish experience is overwhelmingly regarded as the most quintessential and charged meeting of Jews with the project of modernity. Perhaps for this reason, from the eighteenth century through to our own time it has been the object of intense reflection, of clashing interpretations and appropriations. In both micro and macro case-studies, this volume engages the multiple perspectives as advocated by manifold interested actors, and analyzes their uses, biases and ideological functions over time in different cultural, disciplinary and national contexts. This volume includes both historical treatments of differing German-Jewish understandings of their experience – their relations to their Judaism, general culture and to other Jews – and contemporary reflections and competing interpretations as to how to understand the overall experience of German Jewry.
