Este livro trata de algumas possibilidades da escrita da história, das ideias e narrativas de certa parcela da intelectualidade do início do século XX. Os focos principais foram as análises dos ensaios Retrato do Brasil: ensaio sobre a tristeza brasileira (1928) de Paulo Prado (1869-1943), membro branco da elite econômica e social paulista, e a Bahia de Outrora: vultos e fatos populares (1916) de Manuel Querino (1851-1923), homem negro, baiano, e que não era parte da elite socioeconômica local. Ainda, debatemos suas respectivas tematizações em periódicos das décadas de 1910 à 1930. As hipóteses elaboradas são as de que, a) sem um falso pressuposto da neutralidade e objetividade histórica, houveram nestes ensaios a busca por reflexões a respeito das perspectivas de ação no presente através da tematização do passado brasileiro; b) este uso pragmático do passado se organiza a partir do que chamamos de sentido e de presença, ambos no interior de uma mobilidade ético-política; c) podemos refletir acerca de parte desta historicidade por meio dos ensaios e dos periódicos nesta temporalidade; d) o ensaio é um gênero textual adequado para a incorporação da presença, do sentido e do ético-político nos trabalhos dos autores com os quais trabalhamos.
