Los desplazamientos de la memoria histórica y cultural operados por la vanguardia en Cuba, su política de construcción y de reconstrucción de una tradición nacional, pueden parecer propios de una situación particular, sin embargo, su puesta en correlación con prácticas discursivas de otras zonas del continente permite sostener la hipótesis de que no se trata de un caso aislado, sino de una inflexión peculiar en el torbellino de un movimiento histórico en el que la creación artística y la reflexión estética y política se articulan a un proyecto nacional y continental. El análisis de debates, encuestas, polémicas que como la del Meridiano Intelectual comprometieron a escritores y artistas que se expresaron de manera privilegiada a través de las revistas, permite atisbar la internacionalización de debates ejemplares que todavía atraviesan la cultura latinoamericana. Este libro obtuvo el Premio Casa de las Américas de Ensayo en 2000 y su publicación en 2001 significó un hito en los estudios tanto de las vanguardias latinoamericanas como de las revistas culturales y literarias, cuyo desarrollo posterior tiene mucho que tributar a esta obra. La lúcida trayectoria académica de Celina Manzoni dentro de los estudios latinoamericanos y, en especial, caribeños, tiene en este texto una de sus más valiosas contribuciones.
