Desde el ingreso de España en la Comunidad Europea se han producido cambios significativos dentro y fuera del espacio comunitario que han afectado a la agricultura española, reflejándose en su situación actual. La revisión en curso de la Política Agraria Común, junto a la mayor liberalización del comercio de productos agrarios indican que, de nuevo a comienzos del siglo XXI, es razonable esperar notables cambios. Fueron estas las razones que motivaron que la Revista Española de Economía Agraria, recogiendo las sugerencias del Consejo Asesor, diseñara en 1996 un número monográfico dedicado al sector agrario en las Comunidades Autónomas españolas que, por diversas vicisitudes, hoy aparece publicado como libro, conjuntamente por el Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación y la Editorial Mundi-Prensa. La diversidad del medio natural español, así como la heterogeneidad socioeconómica del país, definen un espacio plural en el que los procesos generales se plasman de forma singular y específica en las distintas Comunidades Autónomas. Por ello, la estructura del estudio parte de la consideración de estas divisiones político-administrativas, con objeto de poder identificar y concretar la variedad de situaciones que presenta la agricultura en España. Esta diversidad debía compaginarse con la máxima homogeneidad del trabajo, para lo que eran precisas unas pautas comunes de contenido, de fuentes estadísticas y de temporalidad, con objeto de establecer comparaciones entre las mismas. A efectos de contar con una visión lo más amplia posible se ha contactado con profesionales de distintos ámbitos científicos y académicos y de la Administración Pública. La visión interdisciplinar podía ser enriquecedora.
