A assistência social embora não seja caracterizada como uma temática nova, tornou-se central na sociedade contemporânea, tanto, em razão das trajetórias históricas de urbanização nas distintas formações nacionais, quanto da eventual emergência de sistemas de proteção social em alguns países dentro de um paradigma de welfare state, tornando-se assim um direito e objeto de ações e políticas sociais multifacetadas. Justificado pela relevância fenomenológica que a profissionalização e institucionalização da assistência social adquiriu nos sistemas de proteção social a partir do século XX, este livro somente foi possível devido ao trabalho colaborativo enendrado por várias mãos, a fim de preencher uma lacuna científica, corroborando para a expansão da fronteira do conhecimento sobre a temática. O trabalho coletivo desenvolvido em rede por um conjunto de vinte pesquisadoras e pesquisadores de instituições públicas e privadas de ensino superior do Brasil e de Portugal traz uma privilegiada imersão comparativa sobre a temática da assistência social a partir da conjugação do estado da arte com uma análise empírica em distintas realidades socioespaciais e com formações históricas específicas. In the 1950s–80s, Brazil built one of the most advanced industrial networks among the "developing" countries, initially concentrated in the state of São Paulo. But from the 1980s, decentralization of industry spread to other states reducing São Paulo's relative importance in the country's industrial product. This volume draws on social, economic, and demographic data to document the accelerated industrialization of the state and its subsequent shift to a service economy amidst worsening social and economic inequality. Through its cultural institutions, universities, banking, and corporate sectors, the municipality of São Paulo would become a world metropolis. At the same time, given its rapid growth from 2 million to 12 million residents in this period, São Paulo dealt with problems of distribution, housing, and governance. This book reveals how the critique of the domination of capitalism inaugurated by the Frankfurt School becomes pluriversal, motivating the historical Critical Theory of Coloniality (CTC) dialogue between the Global South and the Global North. CTC expresses the emergence and historical actuality of a set of intellectual fields aimed at denouncing domination and promoting emancipatory ideas at the borders of colonial capitalism. The book argues that the actuality of the CTC relies on the importance of valuing theoretical and methodological pluralism in the context of the necessary redefinition of the directions of global society.
